A fresh wave of drone strikes have been launched deep into Russia by Ukraine. The shock overnight operation forced Moscow to defend its airspace and briefly pause activities at two key airports. Russian officials said that some 10 drones had been shot down close to the capital, with an additional 57 being intercepted elsewhere.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that first responders were sent to points around the city where the drones had made contact, although zero casualties have been reported.

In Tula, the region directly south of Russia’s capital, a drone attack prompted a blaze at Azot’s chemical facility where explosives are manufactured.

Regional authorities said two people were injured.

This major move arrives amid Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ramping up of urgent calls for reinforcement of his country’s air defenses.

Speaking in an official address Saturday evening, Zelenskyy called out Russia’s latest missile and drone onslaught. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, at least three people were killed and dozens of others were injured.

Zelenskyy stressed that Russia’s recent attacks could not be “excused as retaliation”. He claimed they were part and parcel of Moscow’s wider plans to crush Ukraine’s resistance to the invasion. He said the United States ought to speed up the delivery of advanced air defense systems, as Europe’s safety depended on it.

Several European countries have increased assistance to Ukraine, but Zelenskyy hinted that it simply was not enough, and that time was running out, warning: “Only time separates us from results”.

Ukraine Puts Pressure on Talks

Increased fighting marks an expanding gap between public pronouncements and reality as Washington-led diplomacy continues to flounder. Whether or not Trump is receptive, Zelenskyy’s message remains firm: Putin and his cronies need to face coordinated and consistent global international pressure if talks are to lead anywhere.

“Pressure brought Russia to negotiations once,” Zelenskyy said. “It can bring them back again — but only if the world does not relent.”

The drone offensive comes just a week after Ukrainian agents pulled off a covert operation against Russian strategic bomber bases, using trucks to smuggle over 100 drones behind enemy lines.

Moscow’s promised retaliation now appears underway, but Kyiv’s growing technological prowess in drone warfare may be shifting the balance, albeit slowly, in Ukraine’s favor.
