PUBLISHED on August 6, 2025, 12:44 PM EST – Key Points and Summary – The war in Ukraine is escalating dramatically just days before President Trump’s August 9 ceasefire deadline is set to expire.

Russian forces have captured the strategic hilltop city of Chasiv Yar, are engaged in street fighting in Kupiansk, and have launched one of the deadliest drone attacks on Kyiv in months, killing 31 people with new jet-powered Shaheds.

In a tit-for-tat escalation, Ukraine is striking back, hitting major Russian oil refineries and other critical infrastructure.

With both sides intensifying attacks instead of de-escalating, the conflict is entering a more dangerous phase.

Russia Gains Ground as Trump’s Ceasefire Deadline Looms on Ukraine

Is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine hastening towards a more dangerous phase?

The ramping up of Moscow’s multi-pronged offensives across the east and north, despite Washington’s push for a ceasefire, would suggest so.

Russia Captures Strategic Hilltop

Moscow’s biggest recent gain arrived with its successful capture of Chasiv Yar, a hilltop city in Donetsk that had resisted Russian advances since March 2024.

Now in Russian hands, the town sits along a canal.

The Qatari-state funded Al Jazeera network notes that it offers commanding views over Ukraine’s eastern “fortress belt” of fortified cities including Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, and Kramatorsk.

Russian paratroopers claim to have overrun the town on July 31, eventually encircling key Ukrainian positions in the city of Donetsk.

Russian analysts praised the gain as a “vantage point,” but US-based military experts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) questioned the tactical significance given that Russian forces have been operating within artillery range of Ukraine’s key supply routes for months.

Still, Ukrainian officials are naturally displeased over the loss. Kyiv’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, noted that Pokrovsk, 35km southwest of Chasiv Yar, is a hugely dangerous ongoing flashpoint.

Russia’s movement there has damaged Ukraine’s ability to rotate troops and resupply positions while they attempt to sabotage Moscow’s offensive.

Street Fighting Unfolds in Kharkiv

Russian forces have also managed to push into Kupiansk in northern Kharkiv, where they are allegedly involved in street-to-street fighting.

They also claim additional advances in Dnipropetrovsk, an area beyond the four regions Russia annexed in 2022, citing the need to create a “buffer zone”, a request Kyiv simply sees as a smokescreen for Russia’s lust for more territorial gains.

Russia also launched one of its deadliest drone attacks in recent months on July 31. Jet-powered Shahed drones struck Kyiv, killing 31 people.

The new drones fly faster and lower than their propeller-driven predecessors, making interception harder. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the strikes as “absolutely vile.”

Ukraine Strikes Russian Energy Infrastructure

But Ukraine is hitting back. In a slew of coordinated strikes, it damaged two of Russia’s major oil refineries in Ryazan and Novokuybyshevsk. A Shahed drone facility in Krasnodar and a critical radio electronics plant in Penza were also hit.

A fire was also reported at an oil depot in Sochi, and Ukrainian media claim explosions have knocked out a key gas pipeline used by Russia’s military industry.

This tit-for-tat escalation is unfolding as both sides dismiss meaningful negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to allege that Kyiv is “not ready” for peace, while Donald Trump, expressed his “disappointment” in his Russian counterpart and ordered two US nuclear submarines to reposition “just in case.”

What Happens Next?

Trump’s August 9 deadline for a ceasefire is now less than a few days away, and the battlefield is ramping up rather than settling down. What happens next may once again come down to what is unfolding on the ground, where Russia seems keen to not back down, rather than on the polished negotiation tables.

Russia forces are already in pokrovsk, the heavily defended redoubt that if surrendered or vanquished by its nazi defenders, could lead to a serious and widespread collapse of the entire ‘eastern front’.

The nazis’ eastern front in donetsk. That is.

    But that’s beside the point.

There’re still large pockets of nazi forces in sumy and kharkov, too. Sumy and kharkov represent the fastest gateway to moscow through ukraine. These two are in the northern region. They MUST BE ELIMINATED !

    How.

By judicious use of tactical nukes. Wipe them all off.

Well, dudette; the facts in the op-ed are just so very partial. Luckily this site allows peer review.

The history should not be one sided. Please. The orc peasant russians have been greenlighted by POTUS Obama’s Democrat Cabal in 2014 to restart their ancient 1000 year old genocide of Ukrainians.

And, also inn 2014, POTUS Obama greenlighted the re-start by Putin’s “little green groomer” military of the mass abduction, re-documentation and air shipping of little Ukrainian children to awaiting very, very needy muscovite russian language teachers and table top dancing, ruskie style, instructors.

So, what the hell is another POTUS now attempting to greenlight the outright theft of Ukrainian family homes, farms, factories, fields, forests by ignoring the vile unilateral actions in 2014 of the POTUS Obama.

The Ukrainian invention of drone warfare and its brisk evolution is something the Ukrainians can handle cognitively and with financial facilitation of the equipment needed to beat the orcs ruskies stealing their land.

The Ukrainians need huge money to produce huge numbers of drones to handle up to 4X situations. 24hours a day for 7 days is 1X. That is how many drones Ukraine must have in stock to reply to the drone mass attacks supplied by the HAN CCP Zi regime covert funding.

That the USA just can not process the new drone offence/defence era and understand it, is just bloody obvious. The USMC just trained 400 marines in how to touch a drone and read the first USMC manual. Great. Zero of the 400 have been tax funded to attend the Ukrainian front lines and get “psychological drone stress” exposure. The USA needed to be at the 400,000 man level as of today.

POTUS Obama + Trump both ( with all generals) needed to spend 7 full days in downtown Kherson, Ukraine for some orc ruskie “Human Safari” drone hunting. If the two survive the ruskie drone hunters they would somewhat understand what the USA lacks.

Trump made the decision to not help the independent Ukraine survive. While Biden donated military equipment to Ukraine, Trump donates zero and demands that the Europeans buy at full price all defence equipment.

Now, this biased party wants to pretend he is some adjudicator of international law. Everyone knows that Trump will deny Obama sold out Ukraine and will promote the theft of Ukrainian land by the orc tsarlings basement butchers.

Trump is not an adjudicator and is very biased. That the EU has failed to produce a leader of the WEST, a voice for victory for the WEST, the EU more tragically fails to demand in public a legal role in this fake adjudication scam. The scam give-away of Ukrainian soil, farms, fields, factories, forests and children by 2 Yankee POTUS is a collusion of international vile proportions.

Yes, yes, this is a dangerous phase. As op-ed Yankee writers refuse to refer to, at least, the last 500 years of peasnt russian ethnic genetic need to “Harvest” Ukrainian “Lolitas” in the Ukrainian hinterlands, a fundamental pillar of the Ruskie psychology is glossed over. If Trump immediately demanded compensation for each and every Ukrainian victim, this need of the genetic rutting ruskie would be terminated. But, Trump seems obsessed with giving more no-cost cuddle time, free of any criminal charge, to these ruskie child molesters and cultural genociders.

Yes, the time for America as a society to come to grip with its prime, long-time, vile cold war enemy, tsarling Putin, is in a few days. This vile enemy has a long game and it seems the greedy grasping enemy has a great cognitive advantage in the “deal game” over the current MAGA POTUS Trump.

Will the POTUS Trump succumb as we all watch and, as the Yankee head, willingly sell out the independent Ukrainian nation?
