Key Points and Summary – The staggering human toll of the war in Ukraine is shrouded in a fog of conflicting reports and deliberate deception.

-President Zelenskyy recently claimed Russia’s daily losses are triple Ukraine’s, while independent Western estimates place total Russian casualties near one million.

-At the same time, a controversial report from allegedly hacked databases cites astronomical Ukrainian losses, which Kyiv dismisses as disinformation.

-Compounding the confusion, investigations show Russia is systematically reclassifying its missing soldiers as “deserters” to suppress official numbers, making the true cost of Europe’s bloodiest conflict since WWII nearly impossible to verify.

Russian Daily Losses ‘Triple’ Ukraine’s

The war in Ukraine has entered its fourth year with casualty figures that reflect the staggering human toll of Europe’s bloodiest conflict since 1945. But as new data emerges, the numbers themselves have become a point of contention.

Ukraine War Losses: What We Know

President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters last week that Moscow’s losses are around triple Ukraine’s. The Ukrainian leader said Russian casualties had totalled some 1,000 per day- around 500 deaths and 500 injuries.

He said that in comparison, Ukraine only had around 340 casualties daily: approximately 18 killed and 243 injured.

Moscow, by contrast, does not publish casualty statistics, while independent analysts suggest that Russia has sustained catastrophic losses but remains able to replenish its ranks.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated earlier this summer that nearly a quarter of a million Russian troops have been killed, with close to one million killed, wounded, or missing overall. By some measures, Russia has already suffered more fatalities in Ukraine than in all of its post-World War II wars combined.

Ukraine Losses Almost Reach 2 Million

Ukraine’s losses, though officially concealed, are also enormous. A controversial report this week cited hacked Ukrainian military databases, allegedly breached by Russian-affiliated hacker groups, which suggested over 1.7 million Ukrainian soldiers are dead, injured, or missing. Russian media claims the report is fake.

However, the data suggests Ukrainian fatalities have spiked in 2025, reaching over 600,000 this year alone. Kyiv has dismissed the report as Russian disinformation, while Zelensky himself earlier insisted that only around 46,000 Ukrainians had been killed since 2022.

Independent Western estimates usually place Ukrainian deaths in the hundreds of thousands, though still below the extraordinary figures cited by Moscow’s cyber allies.

Russia Classifies MI Soldiers ‘Deserters’

Complicating matters further are Ukraine war investigations showing that Russia has systematically reclassified missing soldiers as “deserters.”

Reports by iStories and the Kyiv Independent reveal how families of troops listed as deserters are denied compensation, allowing the Kremlin both to suppress politically damaging casualty statistics and to avoid financial obligations to relatives of the dead.

This bureaucratic sleight of hand has left many Russian families in limbo, robbed of both closure and state support.

The attrition of this conflict has reached levels not seen in post-Second World War Europe.

Some estimates claim the combined military losses of the conflict have reached over 2.5 million.

Amid the soaring casualties, there is no sign of an immediate peace deal.

Undermanned Ukrainian forces are struggling against Russian advances, and Putin continues to demand the entire Donbas in any peace deal.
