The US Military Just Got Handed an Odd Job: Denying an ‘Attack’ on Iran That Its Own President Had Just Posted Online

Nobody has established whether the video came from inside the White House, from elsewhere, or from another user. Iran’s government oil company felt obliged to reassure the market that the island was calm.

President Donald Trump is no longer “low-keying it” with Iran, it seems, with news this morning that the United States and Iran exchanged direct military attacks for the first time in more than a month overnight.

The strikes abruptly end a period of relative calm, raise the prospect of a return to regular military strikes, and come after the U.S. President shared an AI video overnight depicting Iran’s Kharg Island being destroyed.

U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers located on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, August 30, after the U.S. military claimed that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel were preparing to deploy additional sea mines in the waterway.

Iran responded overnight with ballistic missile attacks targeted at bases hosting U.S. forces in Jordan. Iranian forces also claimed to have launched drones against U.S. military assets located in the United Arab Emirates.

Jordan claimed it intercepted eight missiles entering its airspace and the UAE confirmed its forces intercepted an Iranian drone. UAE authorities, however, rejected Tehran’s claims that Al Minhad Air Base had been successfully attacked.

U.S. Strikes Larak Island

U.S. Central Command described the attack as a limited operation intended to prevent Iran from placing more mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and not a return to large-scale, nightly strikes.

CENTCOM spokesman Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said that Iranian forces had been witnessed preparing rocket systems capable of deploying sea mines into the waterway when the strikes were launched.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard also acknowledged that the strikes caused casualties among military personnel and civilians, but did not provide a death toll.

Iranian media also reported and confirmed the strikes.

Larak Island is a critical military and economic site for Iran, located near Bandar Abbas and along the shipping lanes connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Being located directly beside one of the most economically significant waterways in the world, and the source of Iran’s primary leverage, makes it a critical military site for Tehran and its missile forces.

CENTCOM pushed back against Tehran’s characterization of the strike as an unprovoked act of aggression, describing IRGC forces as posing an “imminent threat.”

“In essence, Iran created the threat, and the U.S. military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce,” CENTCOM said.

Iran Retaliates Against U.S. Bases

Iran responded to the strikes within hours, with the IRGC announcing a missile and drone operation against two bases in Jordan that host U.S. forces.

The strike followed ongoing threats by Tehran that continued U.S. aggression would be met with strikes against military bases and sites throughout the Middle East that either host U.S. personnel or have a military connection to the United States.

According to the IRGC, maintenance and technical infrastructure at locations used to deploy U.S. fighter aircraft at King Hussein Air Base and Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Al Azraq were targeted overnight. Tehran also claimed that the strikes caused “heavy damage” but provided no evidence.

Iran also claimed to have struck U.S. assets at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, but the UAE Defense Ministry denied that the facility was successfully targeted.

It did, however, confirm that Emirati forces intercepted an Iranian drone moving over the country’s territorial waters.

Iran Claims U.S. Reaper Shot Down

Iranian forces also claimed to have shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone operating over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the IRGC, the long-range surveillance and strike aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf.

The United States had not confirmed the loss as of Monday morning. Iran’s Mehr News Agency published the claim, along with a statement praising Iranian soldiers.

The IRGC Navy also claimed that a supertanker caught fire after striking two sea mines while attempting to transit what Iran described as an “illegal” southern route operating through the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC claimed the vessel suffered major fires and was forced to stop, but the tanker was not identified, and the claim could not be independently verified immediately.

Iran also issued fresh warnings that vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz via the southern Omani route, or under U.S. protection, could be targeted.

Trump Threatens Iran’s Main Oil Hub

Also overnight, the president shared an AI-generated video that appeared to depict Kharg Island being destroyed.

“Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!!” Trump wrote in an accompanying post on Truth Social.

The post appeared to suggest that President Trump is considering launching new strikes on critical Iranian infrastructure should the Iranian strikes continue.

However, Washington may still be reluctant to continue the attacks, having acknowledgedinternally  a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor, swhich makese continued warfare extremely dangerous for the United States.
