Donald Trump Blew Up the Republican Party and Still Won’t Admit His Actions Created Total Chaos for the GOP

Republicans lost not only battleground races but also strongholds like Kansas and Texas, despite a big war chest and Musk’s support. The Vice President blamed the Iran war, Florida’s governor-elect said many Republicans stayed home or backed Democrats, and Trump celebrated his new White House ballroom while threatening to use his veto.

Republicans Lost the Midterms Because They Were Their Own Biggest Enemy – Republicans experienced a rout during Tuesday’s midterm elections, losing not only in battleground states — many where President Donald Trump had won in 2024 — but also in states considered to be the party’s strongholds. The party suffered a resounding defeat despite a sizable war chest and mitigating factors — including support from Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, a largely demoralized and unpopular Democratic Party, and a Supreme Court ruling that favored its campaign spending.

The Blue Wave They Saw Coming

The GOP started the year strong. Pundits and political observers expected the president and his party to keep the majority in Congress, despite growing dissatisfaction with Trump and his policies. Kansas farmers were losing their livelihoods (some were even taking their own lives) owing to Trump’s tariffs, ICE was arresting and detaining illegal immigrants in detention centers with reportedly inhumane conditions, and many Americans were concerned about corruption in the government.

Then Trump bombed Iran. The decision sparked steep gas price hikes and higher prices nationwide.

In a post-midterm election story, The New York Times reported that strategists and advisers within the Republican Party had already seen the “blue wave” of Democratic victories on the horizon.

As the midterm election results came in, Republicans were forced to reckon with the effects of the war, which apparently was the last straw for many Americans. Vice President JD Vance posted a lengthy statement on social media admitting that “The reason we lost is the war [in Iran],” adding that “To the people who are pissed off and want to say, ‘I told you so’: you’re right, you did tell us so.”

Trump Not Admitting Why the GOP Lost: Trying Smoke and Mirrors

Trump is trying to take the loss in stride, boasting to the media about the new White House ballroom, set to be completed soon. As he called reporters in to celebrate the fitting of the last steel beam — which he signed before it was fitted into the structure — the president waxed on about how the new ballroom was a “special structure” and a “thing of beauty,” in a seeming attempt to move away from the ugly defeat his party had suffered just a day earlier.

He, of course, could not avoid questions about the loss, but seemed unfazed by a hostile Congress. He claimed the Democrats had “already called, and they want to talk about things” and said he expected to “get along” with the opposition. He said that if Democrats became “destructive,” he would use the “power of the veto.”

Unlike Vice President JD Vance, Trump was defiant in the first few hours after election results came in, posting an image of his signature red cap with “VETO” spelled out in large capital letters.

A Resounding Loss and Rebuke

The GOP’s losses were nothing short of catastrophic. Kansas, which had not elected a Democratic senator for roughly a century, saw Democratic Senate candidate Adam Hamilton take the seat from incumbent Republican Roger Marshall.

In swing state Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed weathered multiple attacks from Trump — including the accusation that he was a “jihadist” and a terrorist supporter — to handily win the Senate seat from the GOP’s Mike Rogers.

Even in Texas, long seen as an impregnable Republican stronghold, Democrats took both the Senate seat and the governor’s mansion. Democrat James Talarico beat Attorney General Ken Paxton — who received a strong endorsement from the president — for the Senate seat. Gina Hinojosa became Texas’ first Latina governor, unseating the incumbent Republican governor, Greg Abbott.

Their Own Worst Enemy?

In Florida, one of the few states where Republicans managed to hold on to power, Republican Florida Governor-elect Byron Donalds admitted the GOP needed rebuilding from within. “What I’m starting to see is that we have a lot of Republicans who either did not vote or decided to go and vote for Democrats,” he told Fox News. “I think there’s a frustration out there that we have a responsibility to address,” he added.

Despite the president saying that the GOP “fought hard” in the last election, a post-election poll by the Associated Press indicated that voters were simply fed up with the antics of Trump and his administration. The poll indicates they were so fed up that they voted for Democrats even though they didn’t explicitly support the party.
