President Donald Trump Could Get Impeached Again

The “I-word” — impeachment — is in the air for President Donald Trump. It isn’t exactly at the forefront of politics, but it’s certainly on the periphery.

Rep. Al Green (D-TX), the Democratic Congressman who was censured by the House earlier this year after he interrupted the president’s speech before Congress, announced at a rally over the weekend that he is preparing articles of impeachment against Trump. Deferring to Trump as “a goliath” and himself as David, Green acknowledged that impeachment is a long shot, especially with Republicans in control of Congress, and not even his own party’s leadership on board with the effort.

But Green is not the only person discussing a third Trump impeachment. Steve Bannon, Trump’s former adviser, is also talking about it.

Worries From “The War Room” on Impeachment

After the Democratic-backed candidate won last week’s Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, maintaining a Democratic majority on that swing state’s highest court, Bannon raised the alarm on his “War Room” show, as reported by Newsweek.

“We’re going to lose two congressional seats; that’s just a fact,” Bannon said on the show. This was about a case before that court that is challenging Wisconsin’s Congressional district map; Bannon is concerned that the Democratic majority will throw out the current map and give the Democrats more seats from that state.

Then, Bannon’s logic goes, the Democrats would be closer to a House majority, and once they have one, they will proceed with a third impeachment of Trump.

“It raises the stakes in 2026 even higher and I told you this was going to happen.”

This appears to be wild speculation on Bannon’s part. The Democratic leaders in Congress have not said that impeachment of Trump is on their agenda, should they retake the House majority, whether in 2026 or through a special election sweep before that.

When Nancy Pelosi was still the House Speaker, she was famously skeptical of a Trump impeachment effort, although she and the other Democratic leaders changed their tune after the exposure of the Trump/Zelenskyy call.

Even if the Democrats get a big win in the midterm elections next year, they’re unlikely to gain a two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict. And after the first two impeachments did nothing to prevent Trump from rising to the presidency again, there’s a chance the Democrats might conclude that there’s no point in doing it a third time.

Also, on the same night that the Democrats won that Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, the GOP won a pair of special elections for the House in Florida, to fill the seats of Signalgate figure Mike Waltz and failed attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz. There are more special elections to come, but the night wasn’t a total wipeout for the Republicans.

What Could Change?

But, of course, there’s also a chance the political winds could shift to the point where impeachment becomes a political reality.

Imagine if, say, the current economic uncertainty gives way to an economic calamity on par with the Great Recession if not the Depression, and the tariffs Trump put in place are the unquestionable reason why. This could lead to a repudiation of a president, unlike anything we’ve seen in recent history.

What if the cost of the iPhone increases by $350, as analysts from UBS predicted this week could happen? What if there’s another surge in the cost of everyday items like food or gasoline, that everyone in the country notices? That would likely make Trump very unpopular.

This would almost certainly lead to a midterm election wipeout that puts the Democrats back in control of Congress. And that’s to say nothing of new scandals that could befall Trump, and with Trump, such things tend to happen.

In that case, impeachment could become a live possibility, and there’s even a chance that some Republicans, seeing Trump as a lame duck and trying to find their way in a post-Trump future, will finally break with him.

But that’s a long way away, and in the meantime, impeachment is unlikely to be a viable possibility for a while. But, it is out there as as a possibility. And Trump should keep it in mind.
