Donald Trump Can’t Figure Out What To Do As He Now Wants to Work With Democrats and Attacks His Own GOP

After telling voters to pretend he was on the ballot, Trump watched Democrats sweep the midterms, then swung between congratulating them, blasting defeated Republicans and posting a red ‘veto’ hat. His vice president blamed the Iran war, and the likely next House Oversight chair told the administration to lawyer up.

As Republicans struggle to make sense of last night’s defeat and plan their next steps, US President Donald Trump has not been shy about saying what is on his mind after what many see as a rebuke of his performance in office.

Trump: Between Rage and Resignation

“Pretend I’m on the ballot,” Trump had repeatedly urged supporters during dozens of campaign rallies leading up to this year’s midterm elections.

It seems voters took him up on the offer, with what many are calling a “blue wave” serving as a stinging indictment of the president, his policies, and his decision-making through the first half of his second term.

Since news of election results came in — with the vast majority of races already decided — Trump has vacillated between congratulating Democrats, blasting fellow party mates, and threatening to veto Democrat-led legislative initiatives.

Speaking to The New York Times, the president said he was “willing to accept” the election results, adding that he was “prepared” and “excited” to work with Democrats.

On his own social media platform, Truth Social, Trump implied that he would be a perpetual block on liberal bills, posting an image of his signature red cap that had “VETO” spelled out in large capital letters.

Trump also took shots at defeated Republican candidates, including outgoing Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, whom the president accused of being a RINO (Republican in Name Only). Should he have been on the ballot, Trump claimed that the GOP would have “won in a LANDSLIDE [sic].”

After Trump Decided to Bomb Iran, the Fall of the Republicans Was Inevitable

It wasn’t always this way, and it didn’t have to be.

The GOP and Trump began the year on a high note, with conservatives expected to maintain their stranglehold on all three branches of government.

However, the war Iran sparked the beginning of a souring against Trump — one of whose campaign promises was to end all wars — as consumers began to feel the effects of the war here at home through repeated hikes in the price of gas.

Vice President JD Vance affirmed this view.

“But everyone knows why we lost,” the vice president wrote in a lengthy post on social media platform X. “The reason we lost is the war,” referring to the war in Iran. Vance also said that he was “open” to making changes to immigration enforcement, which he said could be things like “focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor.”

Democrats Flip Key States, Dominate in Several Republican Strongholds

In Michigan, a swing state, voters elected the first Muslim member of the Senate. Democratic candidate and former state health official Abdul El-Sayed won 53% of the vote, while his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, got 45%. El-Sayed’s victory came despite repeated verbal attacks from Trump, who called El-Sayed a “jihadist” who would “open” America to terrorists and their ilk.

Democrats also won the governor’s mansion on similar margins, with Jocelyn Benson edging out opponent John James.

Kansas elected its first Democratic senator in more than 100 years, sending Methodist megachurch pastor Adam Hamilton to Washington over incumbent and aspiring second-termer Republican Senator Roger Marshall.

Republicans also lost their Senate seat for Texas to James Talarico. The 37-year-old former member of the state legislature won against Attorney General Ken Paxton, 55.1% to 43.0%.

Governor Abbott managed only 45.7% of the vote, as Texans elected the first Latina governor and the first Democratic governor since 1995, Gina Hinojosa, who got 52.8%.

The Ball is in the Democrats’ Court

The new session of Congress will begin after members are sworn in on January 3, 2027.

Democrats will then face the challenge of working with a hostile executive branch and building support for critical legislation that Trump vetoes — and Democrats need a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the House to override a presidential veto.

Democrats are also angling to seek accountability for violations they believe were committed by the Trump administration and enabled by his supporters.

California Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to assume the chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee, posted on X, “LAWYER UP.”
