Donald Trump Just Did the Weirdest Thing Ever: He Is Now Praising the Democrats Historic Midterms Win

Trump congratulated Democrats after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress, saying they did a good job and that he looks forward to working with them. He insisted the results weren’t a hit on him, acknowledged the Iran war played a part and posted a red ‘veto’ hat on Truth Social.

President Donald Trump has been remarkably magnanimous in the wake of the Republican Party’s defeat on Tuesday night, congratulating Democrats on their victory and even praising the opposition party for its successful campaigns across the country, including in historically Republican states and districts.

The president has told reporters that he is prepared to work with its leaders after Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress.

In a series of interviews on election night and early Wednesday morning, November 4, the president suggested that the Democrats had earned their victory.

He publicly accepted the election results and suggested that a series of bipartisan agreements and deals could define the final two years of his presidency.

Speaking to Fox News, the president offered an unusually positive assessment of some of his biggest opponents.

The president also told CBS News that he is prepared to work with the Democratic Party for the benefit of the country and even criticized some of the Republican candidates this year for not running effective campaigns.

He also pushed back against claims that the poor Republican showing was a result of his performance as president, insisting that he remains extremely popular and that voters understand the reason he started the war with Iran.

Democrats Waited 11 Years

Speaking with Fox News over the telephone, President Trump acknowledged the massive scale of the Democratic victory on Tuesday.

“Well, I say this: congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job,” Trump said. “They’ve been looking for this one for 11 years, and they finally got it. But I don’t view it as a hit on me.”

It was perhaps a surprising response to many, given the years of hostility between the president and the Democrats.

In other comments reported by ABC News, the president said that the Democrats had fought hard for their win and acknowledged the years of political fighting.

He did not, however, interpret the results as a rejection of his policies and argued that the administration has achieved substantial economic and political success since he took office.

He also said he believed Republicans would have done much better had he been on the ballot.

The president’s comments, however, may be overly generous.

While Democrats have spent large sums of money campaigning in states that may normally lean heavily Republican, polls have shown for months that Democratic wins would likely come from a combination of Republican dissatisfaction with the president, low enthusiasm among Republican voters, and worsening domestic economic conditions.

The Democrats fought, but the win cannot reasonably be described as a victory for the Democratic agenda — whatever that may be.

Trump Congratulates Democrats

In an election night interview, the president explicitly offered to cooperate with the Democratic Party.

“My message is, congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country,” Trump said, according to CBS News.

Then, during an interview with The New York Times, Trump was asked whether he would recognize the results. Trump said he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results.

“Well, you know, look forward to working with them,” he also said. “We’ll probably work something out.”

Trump Acknowledges Iran War Impact

The president also acknowledged that the war with Iran played a part in the results.

Trump said that he believes voters understood the reason the war was initiated and why it needed to happen, but that the economic impact of the war, which he believes will be short-term, encouraged people to either vote Democrat or stay home.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said that rising gasoline prices had frustrated voters.

“I think a part of it was Iran. But at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran. I think historically it’s going to be much more important than this evening, because you can’t let the number one state sponsor of terror have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

“You know, it’s the most dangerous country in the world. And we practically wiped them out after finishing a job. And maybe I will or maybe I won’t.

Maybe they’ll get smart and maybe they won’t. But we’ve, you know, we’ve put them in a lot of hurt, and they’re bad people. They’ve killed thousands of our soldiers. Thousands of people, hundreds of thousands. They killed 75,000 people in the last eight months. Protesters, 75,000 that we know of. And that was as of two months ago,” he also said.

Trump Says Democrats Are Already Calling

President Trump also told reporters that Democratic lawmakers are already contacting him to talk about how they can work together.

Trump told Fox News overnight that he had already spoken to some legislators and had received five calls from Democratic senators and House members, with three more waiting to speak to him.

He refused to name them.

The president also posted a red “VETO” hat on Truth Social, indicating that he is prepared to veto legislation passed by Democrats in Congress over the next two years.
