Mr. Putin, Stop This Senseless War: Germany’s Chancellor Delivered His Message in Person From the Ukrainian Capital

On a surprise visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged thousands of interceptor drones and help building long-range weapons, then told Putin to stop his senseless war. Germany’s spy chief warns his country risks being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia, while protesters in Moscow chanted down with the tsar.

In an unannounced visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany would pledge more financial and military support to Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.

Arriving by special train on October 4, Merz was accompanied by German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, along with representatives and executives from German defense and energy companies.

Ukraine to See Boost in Drone Deployment, Repair of Critical Infrastructure

As part of the support, Germany pledged to provide Ukraine with thousands of interceptor drones, which the Ukrainian military can deploy in the next few months.

This will help Ukraine respond better to the jet-powered drones the Russian military uses, which are hard to intercept because of their speed.

Germany also promised to work with Ukraine to develop long-range weaponry and committed to allocating roughly €1 billion to the effort.

Germany also earmarked another €350 million in support to repair Ukrainian power plants damaged in the ongoing conflict.

At the same time, Merz called on Russia to cease hostilities and enter peace talks.

“Mr. Putin, stop this senseless war! We are ready for talks; we are ready to discuss how to end this war. But these barbaric attacks on Ukraine’s civilian population must stop,” Merz said to reporters covering his visit to the Ukrainian capital.

Merz added that Germany is responding this way because Moscow seems to understand only the “language of strength.”

Russia Waging a “Shadow War”

Merz’s visit and statements, along with Germany’s more visible and increased support for Ukraine’s defense, come as possible Russian gray-zone actions concern many in NATO.

Speaking to members of the German parliament during an intelligence briefing, Martin Jaeger, head of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany’s foreign intelligence service, said Russia is waging a “shadow war” against the country.

Jaeger blamed Russia for a thwarted drone strike at Leipzig airport in August, and said that Russia has stepped up cyberattacks against Germany in recent months.

“The confrontation we are facing with Russia has taken on a new, more dangerous dimension,” Jaeger said during a public hearing of intelligence chiefs at the German parliament.

“Germany is in danger of becoming embroiled in a violent conflict with Russia — the attempted attack in Leipzig is just one example,” he added.

Attempting to Change the Narrative

For its part, Russia has vehemently denied staging the attacks and has instead pointed at Western powers as the oppressors and aggressors, painting itself as the victim.

In a statement made on October 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “We [Russia] are not threatening anyone. We have no intention of attacking anyone – whether in 2029, 2030 or 2050 – but if we are subjected to aggression, we will have no choice but to respond.”

Despite its repeated rhetoric of supposedly just engaging in self-defense, Russia has repeatedly made threats against NATO and Western countries, accusing them of improper conduct and interference in its efforts to annex parts of Ukraine.

Dissent in Russia Strengthens

In a rare show of opposition against a government known for violent responses – both publicly and behind closed doors – Russian authorities arrested around 60 people for staging a protest in Moscow against Russia’s continued war in Ukraine.

Protesters chanted slogans such as “Freedom for political prisoners” and “For fair elections” during a Communist rally in the Russian capital – a number also intoned “Down with the Tsar”, a slogan referencing Putin’s delusions of grandeur and attempts to revive the supposed “golden age” of the old Soviet Union.

Ukraine Hits Russia with Several Robot Attacks

Ukraine has also continued to punch back at Russian offensives, with Ukraine’s Third Army Corps announcing a successful attack on Russian assets through its “Operation Vivaldi”, which is aimed specifically at Russia’s attempts to seize control of the “Fortress Belt” of cities in Ukraine, which is critical to the country’s continued defense.

Using bomb drones and remote-controlled robots, the Ukrainians reportedly hit the Russians from behind, causing at least 2,000 casualties and netting 250 prisoners of war.

The successful offensives come ahead of an upcoming winter campaign that promises to be one of the harshest in recent years.
