Key Points and Summary on Trump and Ukraine Arms – After months of signaling a potential pullback, President Donald Trump has made a dramatic U-turn on his Ukraine policy, driven by growing frustration with Vladimir Putin.

-Following a “disappointing” phone call with the Russian leader and a massive Russian air assault on Ukraine, Trump has reversed a controversial pause on arms shipments.

-The president is now not only resuming aid but also authorizing new weapons packages, a significant policy shift that moves him closer to Kyiv’s position and away from his previous, more conciliatory stance toward Moscow.

Trump’s Big Change of Heart on Ukraine?

Donald Trump and his supposed affinity for Vladimir Putin and Russia were a major storyline of his first term, leading to both the Robert Mueller investigation and Trump’s first impeachment.

The most outlandish conspiracy theories about Trump being an actual Russian agent never panned out. But there was little doubt that Trump was a bit more solicitous towards Putin, and more skeptical of NATO and other alliances, than has been the case for every other U.S. president, of either party, since Putin came to power at the turn of the millennium.

While Trump was out of office, Russia invaded Ukraine, with the Biden Administration leading a coalition to help repel the invasion. And when running to return to the White House in 2024, Trump promised to end the war between the countries and deliver peace, sometimes declaring he would do so on his first day in office.

In the opening weeks of his second presidency, Trump appeared to be going down the same path, especially when he and Vice President JD Vance berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office in February, implying to him that the war can’t be won and that a cutoff of U.S. support was imminent.

However, in the months since, Trump has appeared to shift his thinking, sometimes even expressing the sort of frustration with Putin that he rarely did during his first presidency. The main reason seemed to be that Trump wanted to bring about an end to the war — and possibly burnish his long campaign to win the Nobel Peace Prize — and was upset with Putin for not taking any steps towards peace.

A New Package?

In recent weeks, the Pentagon announced a pause in aid to Ukraine, although subsequent news reports stated that the White House hadn’t signed off on the pause, which was quickly reversed.

The pause, per an Atlantic Council analysis last week, “backfired.”

“A more nuanced interpretation emerged: that this initiative by the Pentagon was uncoordinated with the US State Department and even the White House; that, according to a study done by the Pentagon’s Joint Staff, providing the paused supplies to Ukraine would not jeopardize the readiness of the US armed forces if delivered; and that as far as Trump was concerned, arms transfers to Ukraine were uninterrupted,” the Atlantic Council analysis said.

By last week, Politico reported that new aid for Ukraine was on the way, the first new package passed since the change in administrations.

The weapons, per Politico, “would come from a fund Congress approved last year under President Joe Biden that allows the Defense Department to take weapons out of U.S. military’s stockpiles for Ukraine,” and would therefore not require new appropriations from Congress.

Trump announced that “a major statement” would be made Monday about Ukraine.

How did the president change his mind? The New York Times looked into that question on Monday.

One hypothesis raised by the piece is that Trump, in his first term, often defended Putin because he was angry about the Russian collusion allegations, which at this point are long in the past.

“More Difficult”

“It’s more difficult than people would have any idea,” Trump said at the NATO summit in June, of plans to end the war. “Vladimir Putin has been more difficult. Frankly, I had some problems with Zelensky.”

“They have to be able to defend themselves,” Trump said of Ukraine in comments earlier this month “They’re getting hit very hard. Now they’re getting hit very hard. We’re going to have to send more weapons, defensive weapons, primarily, but they’re getting hit very, very hard. So many people are dying in that mess.”

The White House, meanwhile, has downplayed the idea that Trump has been inconsistent, while also ripping the Biden Administration.

“To ensure all foreign military aid aligns with American interests, the president decided to send Ukraine defensive munitions to help stop the killing in this brutal war,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said this week.

Turns out Donald Trump is just a Beta personality, social climber, from Queens, who has always craved acceptance in power circles constantly aspiring to “join” the next rung up on the ladder, first in New York, then on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

The man from Queens who didn’t hit a home run, but was born on third base with a silver spoon in his mouth craved for acceptance in Manhattan real estate circles.

He did pull off Trump Tower with daddy’s money, I’ll give him that.

But Trump almost lost the family fortune with his Taj Mahal Casino venture, eventually leaving lots of old ladies with brown bags of worthless Taj Mahal stock, after he had dumped his private debt into the Taj Mahal financial books, thus absolving him of the debt, but insuring the Taj Mahal stock would be worthless at the end of the day.

New York bankers cut him off from loans after that, but allowed him enough to keep up the “Trump” brand and told him to go overseas to get new sources of credit.

He came back with golf courses, mostly, and other real estate deals in the hospitality sector (Beta’s are very good in the “suck up” hospitality world).

Of course, “The Apprentice” kept him in the limelight even though it was completely fake, Trump rarely did the hiring & firing, that was left to his subordinates to do… completely contrived, like professional wrestling (which Trump became a big sponsor of), which also was a completely contrived outcome.

Trump has always been the King of Hype, that’s his style, there is no substance there… only seat of the pants flailing about.

Trump, now, wants acceptance into the Washington Elite who detest him and did their best to remove him (he somehow thinks he can co-opt a Washington Elite bent on his political destruction and willing to go great lengths to do it).

Now, he’s cravenly crawling to the Military-Industrial Complex for acceptance (Ukraine) and of course with craven hand-licking of Netanyahu, letting Israel “sucker punch” Iran in an attempt to make Iran into a human anthill of chaos (didn’t work) or worse yet drag us into a regime change war against Iran (not yet).

It’s Trumps war now. Biden 2.0 with more hype… Trump is loaded with excuses and blather when things go wrong… he’s not man enough to admit mistakes… so he doesn’t learn from his mistakes (and all men make mistakes over the course of a lifetime).

Meet the new boss — same as the old boss.

    But with more hype!
