We Don’t Really Know If the Mach 6 SR-72 Darkstar Is Real

Key Points and Summary – The SR-72 “Darkstar” is the long-rumored hypersonic successor to the legendary SR-71 Blackbird, a secret project from Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works designed to fly at over Mach 6.

-While the program’s existence is acknowledged, it remains shrouded in mystery, with no prototype ever publicly seen and timelines for a first flight repeatedly missed.

-Speculation intensified after Lockheed confirmed its involvement with the fictional “Darkstar” jet in the movie Top Gun: Maverick, with officials calling it a “sneaky peak” at the real aircraft, which would rely on pure speed over stealth for survival.

The SR-72 Darkstar Mystery

For decades, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was an icon of American aerospace dominance. It could fly at speeds of more than Mach 3, and since its retirement in 1998, no aircraft has officially stepped in to replace it. But Lockheed Martin has long hinted at a successor: the SR-72 “Darkstar,” a hypersonic concept aircraft aimed at restoring the U.S. Air Force’s edge in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

What We Know

First reported in 2007 and officially acknowledged by Lockheed in 2013, the SR-72 is designed to exceed Mach 6, doubling the speed of the SR-71. The project is alleged to be under development by Skunk Works, Lockheed’s Advanced Development Programs (ADP) division

Public information suggests the SR-72 could eventually operate as an optionally piloted craft, with an 18-meter demonstrator version and a full-scale production aircraft more than 30 meters in length, matching the Blackbird in range and size.

Rather than relying on radar-evading stealth technology, the SR-72 is rumored to be capable of outrunning enemy defenses without requiring advanced stealth technology. Hypersonic speed, some analysts now argue, will offer greater survivability than stealth in the age of advanced air-defense systems and counter-stealth technologies.

Lockheed projected in 2013 that a demonstrator could fly by 2018 – but company officials have yet to secure formal funding for a prototype or engine. No such prototype has ever been seen, but Lockheed has made hints over the years that the project is not dead.

Does It Exist? The Evidence Points Both Ways

Speculation about the SR-72 never really went away, and various public statements have offered clues about what may be going on.

In 2017, Lockheed Martin’s Executive Vice President of ADP, Rob Weiss, said the company was actively developing the aircraft, claiming the technology was mature and nearing operational readiness.

In late 2018, Lockheed again claimed a prototype was on track to fly by 2025. Yet, to date, no such vehicle has been publicly seen or acknowledged by the U.S. Air Force.

In 2023, Lockheed reignited rumors about the aircraft with a cryptic tweet congratulating Top Gun: Maverick on its Oscars win.

Referring to the SR-71 as the fastest “acknowledged” crewed aircraft, the tweet included imagery of the film’s fictional “Darkstar” jet, which looked a lot like Lockheed’s SR-72 concept art.

Lockheed’s involvement in the film was later confirmed, and a former company official even described the jet’s appearance in Maverick as a “sneaky peak” at the real SR-72.

The resemblance between the Darkstar and SR-72 concept designs has prompted speculation that the aircraft is further along in the development process than publicly admitted.

However, at present, the program looks to be behind schedule – at least according to the rare public statements about the program.
