Key Points – As the Israel-Iran conflict enters its fifth day, US President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric with a direct threat to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

-In a Truth Social post, Trump warned that while the US would not “take out” Khamenei “for now,” his patience was “wearing thin” and demanded “unconditional surrender.”

-This follows days of intense Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites.

-The threat has sparked a domestic backlash, with Senator Bernie Sanders introducing a resolution to block a unilateral US strike on Iran, and has drawn international calls for de-escalation.

Trump’s Iran Assassination Threat: Where It Could Lead

As the Israel-Iran conflict continues into its fifth day, U.S. President Donald Trump has raised the stakes with a direct warning to Iran’s Supreme Leader. In a Truth Social post, the president warned that American patience was “wearing thin,” noting that while there is no immediate intention to “take out” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, anything other than “unconditional surrender” from Tehran might prompt him to change his mind.

Israel, on the other hand, made the threat more directly. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Tuesday that Khamenei may face a fate “similar to Saddam Hussein,” issuing a direct warning “against continuing to commit war crimes and launching missiles at Israeli civilians.”

The comments follow predictions by the U.S. president on Monday that Israel would continue to direct military strikes against Iranian nuclear infrastructure and military targets, and a suggestion that he might send Vice President JD Vance or U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Iranian leadership.

Trump’s shock warning to the Iranian leader has drawn criticism both at home and abroad, while leaving analysts uncertain about what, exactly, his endgame may be.

Trump Faces Backlash

As the president considers his options, both Republican and Democratic senators are pushing through with a resolution introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders, the No War Against Iran Act, which would “prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Iran” without congressional backing.

Adding to the pressure at home, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Germany, and the European Union more broadly have also publicly called for urgent de-escalation, warning of the risk of “widening the conflict.”

On Friday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that conditions in the region are now worsening, and that further military action would not bring stability to a region that “rests on a powder keg.”

In backing Israel, Trump appears to be going it alone. His threat to “take out” the Iranian leader has not gained public endorsement from world leaders, with those already opposed to the conflict maintaining their positions and staying largely quiet about the prospect of the leader of the free world ordering the assassination of a foreign leader – the implications of which could be enormous.

As world leaders are undoubtedly aware, Trump’s threat could be a bargaining chip. The president has repeatedly called Iran back to the negotiating table, and Iranian leadership also quickly called for a ceasefire following the strikes, reportedly asking the U.S. president to put pressure on Israel to cease its military campaign. Trump rejected the request and it now seems evident that Israel has no plans to hold back, leaving Iran with one choice: total and unconditional surrender.

Failure to meet the president’s demands could well see the president following through on his most recent threat, fulfilling his promise to ensure that Iran does not become a nuclear power, and staying true to a suggestion in February this year that, without a deal, he’d be faced with the reality of “bombing the hell out of [Iran].”
