‘Old School’ Republicans Hate Trump’s Ukraine Strategy

Key Points – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced sharp criticism from high-profile Republican senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham during a contentious Senate budget hearing on Wednesday, June 11th.

-McConnell questioned the Trump administration’s commitment to democratic allies and pressed Hegseth on “which side do you want to win” in the Ukraine war.

-Graham compared the administration’s approach to 1930s appeasement, dismissing Hegseth’s view that Putin’s future intentions “remain to be seen.”

-The tense exchange highlights a growing rift within the GOP over the administration’s Ukraine strategy, as some senators push for tougher measures like Graham’s expansive sanctions bill against the White House’s preference for negotiation.

Hegseth Takes Heat From Republican Senators on Ukraine and More

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing pressure from high-profile Republican senators over the Trump administration’s handling of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, with Senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham challenging the conservative darling during a Senate budget hearing this week.

On Wednesday, June 11, Senator McConnell – who opposed Hegseth’s nomination, along with two other Republicans – opened the Senate hearing with direct criticism of the Trump administration’s progress with Moscow.

“It seems to me pretty obvious that America’s reputation is on the line,” McConnell said, before asking whether the Trump administration had plans to defend its “democratic allies” against “authoritarian aggressors.”

McConnell’s line of attack also focused on what he sees as an insufficiently small baseline defense budget, as well as the negotiating strategy adopted by the White House that he believes allows Russians to “define victory.”

“I think victory is defined by the people who have to live there – the Ukrainians,” McConnell said.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican representing South Carolina, also criticized Hegseth and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine. When asked by the Republican senator whether they believe Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to cease military invasions after Ukraine, Caine responded, “I don’t believe he is.” Hegseth’s response was more vague, claiming it “remains to be seen.”

It was at this point that the questioning turned nasty, with Graham cutting off the defense secretary and reminding him of Nazi Germany’s territorial expansion prior to the Second World War.

“Well, he says he’s not. This is the ‘30s all over. It doesn’t remain to be seen,” Graham said.

Perhaps the most shocking part of the hearing, however, was the moment McConnell asked Hegseth, “Which side do you want to win?”

The clip quickly went viral.

“As we’ve said time and time again, this president is committed to peace in that conflict. Ultimately, peace serves our national interests and we think the interests of both parties, even if that outcome will not be preferable to many in this room and many in our country,” Hegseth said.

The exchange came as Senator Graham expects his expanded Russian sanctions package, which includes 500% tariffs on countries doing business with Russia, to reach the Senate floor as soon as this week. The Trump administration is on the record opposing the legislative effort, having told senators to hold off from advancing the bill while the president continues efforts to bring Moscow back to the negotiating table.

With escalating tit-for-tat attacks between Ukrainian and Russian forces over the last week, however, a result of Ukraine’s surprise drone attacks on four Russian airbases, the bill looks more likely to pass in the coming days or weeks than the likelihood of Moscow’s representatives reengaging with peace talks.
