The Dassault Mirage 2000-5F Has a Message for the Russian Air Force

The Dassault Mirage 2000-5F has transitioned from a Cold War interceptor to a vital component of the 2026 European air defense architecture. As France navigates a domestic budget crisis and a regional missile shortage, the deployment of these delta-wing fighters to Ukraine marks a significant shift in the Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace’s role in modern high-intensity conflict.

The Dassault Mirage 2000-5F “La Royale” Update

The Mirage 2000 is a multirole, single-engine, delta-wing, fourth-generation jet fighter aircraft designed by Dassault Aviation in the late 1970s for the French Air Force.

Successor to the Mirage III for the French Air Force (Armée de l’Air). The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed and was sold to several nations. It was distinguished by its delta-wing configuration and the introduction of fly-by-wire flight controls, a significant advance for the time.

The Mirage 2000-5F is an advanced variant of the Mirage 2000 series and represents the pinnacle of French aviation technology.

Developed by Dassault, the Mirage 2000-5F first flew in 1991, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aerial capabilities. Equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and weapon systems, the Mirage 2000-5F played a pivotal role in the 1999 Kosovo War.

The aircraft conducted crucial ground-attack and air-to-air missions. Armed with  Magic 2 air-to-air missiles and laser-guided bombs, the Mirage 2000-5F demonstrated its adaptability and effectiveness in both aerial combat and ground support roles.

The 2000-F5 is a highly maneuverable aircraft that outperforms the F-15 and the similarly sized F-16. Dassault’s delta wing design also allowed for low drag, low radar cross-section, high-speed aerodynamics,

Meet the Mirage 2000-5F:

The first flight of the Mirage 2000 took place in 1978, and it entered service in 1983. Initially, the aircraft was intended only for air superiority, but it later evolved into multirole versions.

The Mirage’s delta wing design had the advantage of the blending of the wing root and engine, which allowed the jet to carry more fuel. The jet’s internal fuel tanks could hold over 900 gallons of fuel, 200 gallons more than the Mirage III.

Featuring advanced aerodynamics, fly-by-wire controls, and an SNECMA M53 afterburning turbofan engine, the jet became renowned for its performance and provided 21,000 pounds of thrust.. The Mirage 2000 can hit a top speed of Mach 2.2 (1,452 mph) with afterburners.

The Mirage 2000-5F is a significant upgrade of the earlier Mirage 2000C, featuring advanced avionics, a more capable Thales RDY radar, and increased multi-role capability. While sharing the same airframe, the 5F adds support for MICA missiles, a modernized glass cockpit, and improved, often more numerous, countermeasures compared to older variants.

Mirage 2000s Sent To Ukraine:

In June of 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would provide Kyiv with the Mirage fighter aircraft after training pilots how to fly the warplanes through a program that took place last summer.

He added that Paris will build a coalition with other countries to supply the jets and that Ukraine could even be flying them by the end of the year.

“French combat aircraft — brilliant fighter jets that, under the control of Ukrainian pilots, will prove that Europe is stronger,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a speech to France’s National Assembly, referring to the Mirages.

Paris is reportedly going to send another 10 Mirage 2000-5Fs in the near future.

Mirage 2000-5F Armament:

The Mirage carries two 30 mm (1.2 in) DEFA 554 revolver cannon, 125 rounds per gun. The cannons could be configured to fire at either 1,200 or 1,800 rounds per minute.

The aircraft has nine hardpoints (4 × under-wing, 5 × under-fuselage) with a capacity of 6,300 kg (13,900 lb) external fuel and ordnance.

It can carry Matra 68 mm unguided rocket pods, 18 rockets per pod

Air-to-air missiles carried by the Mirage 2000 include six MBDA MICA IR/RF, two Matra R550 Magic-II, and two Matra Super 530D

Air-to-surface missiles carried include two AM.39 Exocet 2000 EG, a SCALP EG, Crystal Maze, and the Crystal Maze II.

The Mirage 2000 can carry a variety of precision and unguided (dumb) bombs.

PGM 500 and PGM 2000 modular guided bombs, two AS-30L laser-guided missiles, two GBU-12 laser-guided bombs, one GBU-16 laser-guided bomb, one GBU-24 laser-guided bomb, two GBU-49 laser-guided bombs, an ASMP-A tactical nuclear cruise missile, and a Spice 2000

The Mirage 2000’s Combat Service:

The Mirage 2000 entered service with the French Air Force in 1984. It saw action in the Gulf War, the Bosnian War, and the Kosovo War.

As noted above, it was sent to Ukraine to support its fight against the Russian invasion in 2022. Like the American-made F-16 sent to Ukraine, the Mirage 2000 isn’t the best fit for the air battles over Ukraine.

The Swedish Saab JAS-39 Gripen would provide a better fit. The Gripen features advanced electronic-warfare capabilities designed to counter the radars on Russian aircraft and ground-based air-defense systems. But the Ukrainians have been adept at using what they have.

Widely exported to countries like India, the UAE, and Taiwan, the Mirage 2000 remains a significant achievement in military aviation, blending affordability with impressive capabilities.

It is a fourth-generation fighter that is still a very capable aircraft.

Maxines wrote,“For the Offensive Counter Air/ Defensive Counter Air missions, our weapon system remains lethal thanks to our Mica missiles and our Link 16 datalink.

“Dedicated mixed-force tactics have been devised to cooperate with Meteor-armed Rafales during massive raids, when we carry out sweep and escort missions.

“We have to be realistic; we will not win a high-intensity conflict on our own, but we clearly still have our place in French and Allied COMAOs, supporting the most recent fighters, Typhoons, Rafales, and F-35s.”

French Mirage 2000-5Fs have been shooting down Iranian drones using their MICA missiles, creating a shortage in their missile stockpiles. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an urgent crisis meeting to identify long-term solutions, seek alternatives to the missiles, strengthen the armed forces, and address the missile shortage.
