Kyiv Confirms Attack
The Ukrainian Army has since confirmed the attack to the New York Times, although they offered scant detail.
The onslaught took place on July 21, close to Kropyvnytskyi in central Ukraine.
Survivors reported how a shocking and major explosion struck as foreign recruits from as far afield as the United States, Colombia, and Taiwan were scoffing down lunch at picnic tables.
One American recruit, speaking anonymously to the Times, described the blast as the loudest he had ever experienced.
He recalled how debris had ripped across the areas, killing and injuring many of his colleagues.
The blast also set an ammunition store ablaze, causing secondary explosions.
The recruit stated that there were no first aid kits in the mess hall and that no air raid alarm had sounded prior to the strike.
Global Fighters Attracted by High Pay
The camp, known among soldiers as “Camp Krop,” belongs to Ukraine’s military intelligence agency’s international legion.
The legion has drawn fighters from across the globe, primarily drawn by relatively high combat pay. Colombian recruits can earn several times their domestic wages, though at the cost of facing Russia’s heavy artillery and missile barrages.
This is far from the first time Russian forces have targeted troop concentrations.
In March 2022, a missile strike on a training base at Yavoriv near the Polish border killed or injured dozens of foreign fighters. Similar attacks in recent months have also taken Ukrainian lives, including a strike that killed more than 50 cadets in Poltava last year.
Camp Krop Ripe for Russian Attack
Security at Camp Krop had been a sore point before last month’s tragedy, according to two soldiers familiar with the site. Large gatherings for meals, they said, were an obvious vulnerability.
Ukraine’s top commander, General Oleksandr Syrsky, has already vowed to relocate most training underground.
He also said that troops ought to respond to drone sightings and raid sirens instantly.
However, for some troops, both foreign and domestic, these commands may feel like too little, too late.
