Key Points and Summary on Patriot Missiles to Ukraine – U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled a potential shift in his approach to the Russia-Ukraine war following a “very disappointing” phone call with Vladimir Putin on July 3rd, in which he said “no progress” was made.
-Just hours after that call, Russia launched its largest-ever aerial assault on Ukraine.
-The next day, Trump held a “productive” and “strategic” call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
-In a notable change of tone, Trump stated he was now “looking at” sending more Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine because “they’re being hit pretty hard,” suggesting a growing frustration with Moscow’s intransigence.
Trump Could Soon Send Patriot Missiles to Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin on Friday. Speaking to reporters on July 3, Trump said that he was “very disappointed” with the Russian president following a telephone conversation held earlier the same day.
“I’m very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don’t think he’s there. I’m just saying, I don’t think he’s looking to stop, and that’s too bad,” Trump said as he landed in Washington following a rally in Des Moines, Iowa.
The president revealed that “no progress” had been made with the Kremlin with regards to ongoing talks about a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
“We had a call. It was a pretty long call. Talked about a lot of things, including Iran. And we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine, and I’m not happy about that,” Trump said, adding, “I didn’t make any progress with him today at all.”
The conversation marked the first direct communication between the U.S. and Russia since the Department of Defense paused a scheduled delivery of air defense missiles to Ukraine. While the president didn’t rule out the delivery of more ammunition to Ukraine, he also noted last week that he was taking steps to ensure that the United States has “enough for ourselves.”
Only hours after Trump and Putin spoke, reports revealed how the Russian president ordered the “largest-ever” bombardment of Ukraine.
Trump and Zelenskyy Speak
The following day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he held a “productive” and “very important” call with Trump. Zelenskyy hinted that Trump was exploring ways to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses, indicating that he expects Russian aerial bombardments to continue across the country.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said that the two leaders “discussed the current situation, including Russian airstrikes and the broader frontline developments.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump described his call with Zelenskyy as “strategic,” promised to “continue to help” Ukraine, and said he was “looking at” sending more Patriot missiles to Ukraine.
“They need them for defense. I don’t want to see people killed. They’re going to need them for defense. They’re amazingly effective,” Trump said. “They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard.”
The comments seem to suggest Trump is growing tired of attempting to work with the Russians to end the war by encouraging Kyiv to make concessions.
Trump even hinted at the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia, describing how Moscow has so far been able to “handle” the sanctions implemented during the Biden administration.

It won’t make any difference… say a hundred more Patriot missiles. Russia sends, say fifty high quality ballistic missiles and drones into Kiev every couple of days.
(It could be 200 Patriot missiles… it’s not like we can pull a rabbit out of the hat… it would take longer for Kiev to use them up, that’s all.)
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out those hundred Patriots would be used up pretty fast, especially, if they use two Patriots for some of the incoming munitions… which they do.
Sadly, it just ends up getting Trump dragged further into the war…
