A vulnerable U.S. lawmaker is one of the first Democratic senators to call for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.
Georgian Jon Ossoff is considered one of the U.S. Senate’s most beatable members and he is making the rounds in townhalls in his home state.
His liberal constituents want him to campaign harder during his re-election bid and Ossoff is ready to take the fight to the president.
Even if it means acting more aggressively than his normal easy-going manner.
They Want Trump to Be Fired Now
On April 25, Ossoff spoke to a crowd of fired up Georgians that are already tired of Trump and want his ouster now instead of later. Ossoff said that Trump is giving White House “audience availability” to people who buy his “meme coin.” Ossoff believes this action places the president in impeachment territory.
“When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him. There is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense,” Ossoff claimed.
Ossoff Wants Democrat-Majority in the House Too
It is not clear how this rises to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors, but Ossoff was preaching to the choir.
He reminded the audience that an impeachment proceeding would not happen with a Republican-majority in the House, but voters could definitely make a change to the composition of the lower chamber in Midterm elections in 2026.
Ossoff was prompted to speak of the “I”-word from an attendee who wanted the young senator to take the fight directly to Trump and not wait until voters decide at the ballot box.
“Do more. I like you and I will vote for you if you are brave, and you do what we need,” the concerned citizen said. “We need him impeached, we need him removed.”
Ossoff said he “strongly agreed” with the Trump critic. The senator vowed to not only cement his re-election but help make sure the House of Representatives flips to the Democrats in 2026. “And believe me, I’m working on it every single day, every single day.”
Senate Republicans Are Indignant
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the group in charge of guaranteeing the GOP-majority in the Senate, dismissed the Ossoff comments as “disgusting.” The NRSC said that Ossoff is trying to overthrow the majority of voters in Georgia who chose Trump to be president in 2024.
Ossoff Trails in Hypothetical Poll Against Georgia Governor
The Republicans have released numbers that show that Georgia GOP Governor Brian Kemp is beating Ossoff in a poll measuring a hypothetical match-up between the pair.
Kemp leads Ossoff 46 to 40 with 14 percent undecided in the survey by WPA Intelligence for the Club for Growth. However, Ossoff leads other Republicans who may run in the primary which signifies that he is strong against lesser known names.
Kemp has not indicated if he is going to run for the U.S. Senate in 2026, but U.S. Senator Tim Scott, who heads the NRSC, will likely make sure that Kemp is his number one recruit heading into the Midterms.
Uphill Battle for Ossoff
Ossoff is trying to make a national name for himself and that is likely why he is running the impeachment game with Trump. This is an uphill battle as Trump has survived two other impeachment and removal attempts before. The Left believes that Trump’s penchant for ignoring court orders could lead to a situation where a proceeding could take place with a Democrat majority in both chambers on Capitol Hill. This is well-worn and failed playbook that the Left likes to trot out when they disagree with policies coming from the White House.
Ossoff has not really made an impact in the Senate. He is seen as a lightweight and empty suit without the kind of background or charisma that will make him popular as a national fund raiser. Ossoff is only 38, the first millennial U.S. Senator. He won a run-off election is what was a decisive race for Democrat control of the Senate in 2020 against Republican Senator David Perdue.
Ossoff had not accomplished much in his prior career before the Senate. He worked only as a Congressional staffer and made obscure documentaries as a journalist that did not really break through to acclaim. He has been accused of being a “trust funder” after inheriting an undisclosed sum from a wealthy grandfather. His win against Perdue was widely seen as a fluke. Perdue gained 49.73 percent of the vote in the first round which eclipsed Ossoff easily but that barely triggered a runoff that Ossoff then won in 2021.
Trump Impeachment Talk Looks Desperate
The Republicans are confident that they will send Ossoff packing in 2026. This talk of Trump impeachment is a desperate ploy by the ineffective senator to make national headlines. He will need the Democrat machine to assist him with money and support heading into his re-election bid. If the NRSC can secure Kemp as a candidate, the GOP will be in the driver’s seat and Ossoff can sound off about impeachment of Trump all he wants to.
That is not a message that will endear him to Independent voters who are looking for more leadership and policies that can help everyday Georgians.
