Trump ‘Has Already Exceeded Any Major Standard for Impeachment’

Could U.S. President Donald Trump be headed for another impeachment?

The odds are very long that Donald Trump could be impeached again, to be honest.

But some members of the House of Representatives have been talking about it, and now a Democratic senator has indicated that he is on board with the idea as well.

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), who is facing a potentially tough re-election fight in a major swing state in 2026, said at a town hall this week in Marietta that Trump “has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment.”

More Impeachment Drama for Donald Trump

As reported by MSNBC, Ossoff laid out some reasons why.

“I mean, I saw just 48 hours ago, he is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin,” Ossoff said, about Trump’s offer of a private dinner to those who have purchased his coin product.

“When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him. There is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.”

The comments came in response to a question from the audience during the town hall, from a constituent who added, “We need him impeached, we need him removed.”

Ossoff, however, argued that impeachment is not feasible as long as the Republicans control the House of Representatives.

“The only way to achieve what you want to achieve is to have a majority United States House of Representatives,” the senator said. “And believe me, I’m working on it every single day, every single day.”

Many Reasons For Impeachment

A few House members have made noises about trying to impeach Trump in recent months, for a few different reasons.

Rep. Al Green, back in February, first proposed impeaching Trump in connection with his call for a U.S. takeover of Gaza. Green, in early April, announced his intention to introduce articles of impeachment within 30 days, although he did not specify a reason at that point.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) last week came out for the impeachment of the president, over his defiance of a Supreme Court order in the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

That action, the Michigan Congressman said in a statement, “falls under ‘High Crimes’ as outlined in Section 4 of Article Two of the United States Constitution and constitutes an impeachable offense.” Ossoff, in the town hall, also referenced that case as a potential reason to impeach Trump.

About That Memecoin Dinner

Trump announced earlier this month that he would, on May 22, have dinner with the top 220 holders of his  $TRUMP cryptocurrency token, an announcement that caused the coin’s value to surge more than 50 percent. A separate reception will be held for the top 25 holders.

Per NBC News, 80 percent of the $TRUMP supply is controlled by “the Trump Organization and affiliates,” which would appear to provide a direct benefit to the president himself when the coin rises in value, although a vesting schedule prevents early holders from cashing out before a certain time.

While Ossoff appears to be the first senator to call for impeachment over the memecoin gambit, Sen. Chris Murphy, on X, called it “the most brazenly corrupt thing a President has ever done. Not close.”

Two other senators, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have called for an ethics investigation into Trump’s promotion of the token.

The Problems Keep Mounting

The two senators, both established enough as Trump antagonists that he has nicknames for both of them, wrote a letter to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, asking for a probe into the matter.

“President Trump’s announcement promises exclusive access to the presidency in exchange for significant investment in one of the President’s business ventures,” the two senators wrote to the ethics office.

Delaney Marsco, director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, told NBC News that while the memecoin dinner is an “unprecedented ethics breach,” it’s likely not illegal.

“The fact that he is not barred by the law from having these financial interests like this meme coin allows him to engage in a lot of seemingly corrupt activity. It has the appearance of a pay to play, so the president is apparently selling access to himself,” Marsco told NBC.
