Key Points and Summary – Ukraine is relentlessly targeting the Russian railway station in Salsk, a critical logistics hub located 300km from the border.
-In the latest of three recent attacks, Ukrainian drones successfully struck a train carrying military equipment and fuel, causing a massive fire.
-The strikes are part of a broader, and increasingly successful, Ukrainian campaign to cripple the supply lines that are the backbone of the Russian military.
-By repeatedly hitting this vital artery, Kyiv is effectively weakening Russian forces on the front lines by destroying their hardware and fuel before it can even reach the battlefield.
Why Ukraine Keeps Pummeling This Russian Railway Station
Ukrainian drone strikes once again hit a major railway station in the Russian city of Salsk, marking the third day of cross-border attacks intended to cut off a major supply line to Russian troops.
The railway station, located in the Rostov region, is roughly 300 km from the Ukrainian border. The strikes occurred in the early hours of July 29.
The Ukrainian Khorne Group military unit confirmed the overnight strikes on social media. In a statement, the unit said that the drones targeted a train “carrying military equipment and fuel and lubricants.”
Videos and images shared online confirm that the drones hit their target, causing cargo onboard the train to ignite. Images showed military vehicles on fire and large plumes of smoke billowing into the air.
Telegram news channel “Astra,” an anti-war account designated a “foreign agent” by the Russian government, quoted the acting governor of the Rostov region who confirmed the attacks.
“At the moment, a UAV (drone) attack is being repelled in the Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Salsk, Volgodonsk, Bokovsky, and Tarasovsky districts of the Rostov region,” Yury Slyusar is quoted saying.
“In Salsk, on Socialist Street, the roof of a private house was damaged and windows were blown out. The fire occurred at the railway station; the passenger train was moved to a safe distance,” Slyusar also reportedly said.
The acting governor also confirmed that Ukrainian drones struck two fuel tankers.
Astra also shared a video of the fire at the railway station following the July 29 attack. Eyewitnesses reportedly observed drones flying overhead as Russian troops attempted to shoot them down using small arms.
Russian Railways also confirmed the strikes took place, announcing that services have been suspended from the station.
“Today, at 2:00 am, the operation of the overhead contact system at Salsk station in the Rostov region was disrupted due to falling drone debris,” a statement reads.
Why Salsk Railway Station?
Ukrainian drone strikes in Salsk appear to be targeting Russian supply lines. The Salsk railway line is often used to supply Russian troops stationed in Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk.
Russian rail traffic has long been a target for Ukrainian forces – and thanks to Ukraine’s growing drone manufacturing capacity, targeting railway lines is an increasingly easy and relatively inexpensive way of weakening Russian forces on the frontline.
Rail is a crucial part of Russia’s military infrastructure, serving as the backbone of its logistics operations. Moving most of its valuable military hardware and supplies by train makes railways an easy and valuable target for Ukraine.
Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces not only hit the railway station but also a train line power substation in the town of Orlovsky, some 35 miles from Salsk.
