Iran Planning to ‘Restart’ Nuclear Program

A B-2 Spirit, assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, taxis on the flightline Jan. 8, 2018, at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. Approximately 200 Airmen and three B-2 Spirits from Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB), Missouri, deployed to Andersen AFB in support of U.S. Pacific Command’s (PACOM) Bomber Assurance and Deterrence mission. U.S. Strategic Command bombers regularly rotate through the Indo-Pacific region to conduct U.S. PACOM-led air operations, providing leaders with deterrent options to maintain regional stability. During this short-term deployment, the B-2s will conduct local and regional training sorties and will integrate capabilities with key regional partners, ensuring bomber crews maintain a high state of readiness and crew proficiency (Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Key Points and Summary on Iran’s Nuclear Program – A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran, brokered by President Trump, is holding despite a chaotic start, but deep mistrust remains.

-After Trump announced the “12-Day War” was over, Israel reportedly launched another wave of strikes, prompting a furious, expletive-laden reaction from the US President.

-While the direct conflict has paused, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that any return to nuclear negotiations requires assurances against future US attacks.

-Meanwhile, satellite imagery confirms Iran is already assessing damage at its nuclear sites, and officials vow to rebuild, indicating that the core conflict over its nuclear ambitions is far from resolved.

Iran Confirms Damage to Nuclear Power Sites

Amid conflicting reports about the damage done to Iran’s primary nuclear facilities in the United States’ B-2 strikes last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has offered some clarification.

In an interview with CBS News broadcast on Tuesday, Araghchi confirmed that the Fordow uranium enrichment facility was “seriously and heavily damaged.”

The surprise admission comes even as Tehran attempts to paint recent conflicts with Israel and the United States as an overall success for the Iranian regime. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed on X that “the Islamic Republic delivered a heavy slap to the US’s face,” that the “Zionist regime was practically knocked out,” and that Iran is “victorious.”

In an interview broadcast in two parts, Araghchi painted a different picture, admitting that the damage was so extensive that nobody truly knows the conditions within the underground Fordow facility.

“No one exactly knows what has transpired in Fordow. That being said, what we know so far is that the facilities have been seriously and heavily damaged,” he said, adding that Iran needs to “wait and see if they are able to be relaunched or if they will be relaunched.”

The admission not only supports claims by the White House that the strikes were a success, but also confirms plans that were announced by Iranian nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami in June. Eslami said last month that Tehran was in the process of assessing damage at the sites and confirmed that plans were already underway to restart Iran’s nuclear program.

“The plan is to prevent interruptions in the process of production and services,” Eslami said.

According to Araghchi, the Atomic Energy Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran – the nation’s top nuclear authority – was “currently undertaking evaluation and assessment” of the damage, and that a report is expected to be submitted to the government.

That report is unlikely to be released to international watchdogs, including the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On Wednesday, July 2, Iran enacted a new law suspending cooperation with the watchdog.

Under the new law, any future inspection of Iran’s nuclear facilities by the watchdog would first require approval by Tehran’s Supreme National Security Council. The IAEA responded in a statement, acknowledging the new law and stating that they were still awaiting “further official information from Iran.”

During the CBS interview, Araghchi left the door open to potential negotiations with the United States in the future, stating that the “doors of diplomacy will never slam shut.”

The foreign minister’s words effectively confirmed that U.S. and Israeli strikes set back the nuclear program, but that Tehran’s nuclear ambitions remain unchanged.
