‘It’s a Bloodbath’: Democrats Shocked Over Extent of Victory Over Republican Party and History Has Been Made

Democrats flipped seven Senate seats and twenty-five House seats on Tuesday, a night so good that even party insiders struggled to believe it. They won governorships in Texas and Ohio, toppled Republican strongholds like Kansas and Iowa, and one congressman warned the party not to mistake the win for an endorsement.

Democratic voters and politicians alike could not believe their luck at the extent of Tuesday’s midterm election victory over the Republican Party, after Democrats flipped seven seats in the Senate and 25 seats in the House.

“It’s a bloodbath,” reacted former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee executive director Dan Sena. “Democrats are going to be in power in places they haven’t been in power in decades.”

In the Washington Post, newsletter anchor Dan Merica reported that the Democrats “had no idea their night would be so good,” despite the majority of polls forecasting a Democratic victory.

In the Guardian, Midwest political correspondent Rachel Leingang reported that the excitement in Iowa — where Democratic candidate Josh Turek flipped the state blue with a majority of 56,000 votes — “neared a level of disbelief.”

Republicans ‘Following Trump Over the Cliff’ to Defeat

“Republicans made a choice and followed Trump over the cliff,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

Democratic operative Adam Bozzi blamed White House corruption for the blue tsunami.

“Tonight is the story of Republicans paying for the cost of corruption,” he said. “Democrats are going to need to get to work on it when they take control.”

Democratic Congressman Warns Party Not to Take Victory For Granted

Democratic Congressman Jason Crow, meanwhile, warned his party not to take the results of the midterm elections as a glowing endorsement.

“It’s really important that a takeaway is that we are being given an opportunity. That the message should not be, people are completely happy with the Democratic Party, that they think we’re crushing it, and we’re back. That’s not the message,” Crow cautioned. “The message is that people are suffering under Donald Trump, that he is a failed president and hasn’t delivered.

They are open to giving Democrats a chance. And this is an opportunity that’s going to take us really focusing on showing that we deserve their support going forward.”

In the Senate, Democratic challengers defeated incumbent Republicans in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maine.

Several Republican Strongholds Flip Blue in Shocking Defeat For Trump and the GOP

Before Tuesday’s election, Kansas had not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, nearly 100 years earlier, while Iowa and Texas had been firm Republican strongholds for 46 years and 33 years, respectively.

Democrats also scooped up the late Senator Lindsey Graham’s seat, with his sister Darline Graham losing by almost 100,000 votes.

In Michigan, Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed was elected to the Senate, becoming the first Muslim senator-elect after defeating Trump-backed candidate Mike Rogers.

Democratic Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens’ last-minute endorsement of El-Sayed’s Republican opponent did little to turn the tide.

In the House, several long-serving Republican members of Congress also lost their seats to Democratic challengers, including Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson, and Pennsylvania Congressman Scott Perry.

Wittman has served in Congress for almost twenty years, while Hudson and Perry have both served for fourteen.

The Republican Party also lost several important gubernatorial races.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Texas Governor Greg Abbott, giving the Democratic Party its first gubernatorial victory in the state since 1990.

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy lost Ohio’s gubernatorial race, with Democratic candidate Amy Acton ending sixteen years of Republican control.

Trump Blames Others For Brutal Defeat, Insists It Wasn’t His Fault

Following Abbott’s defeat, President Donald Trump quickly turned on the governor, blaming him for his own loss and accusing him of being a “RINO,” or “Republican in Name Only,” despite having given him a glowing endorsement just hours before.

Former Republican governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, reacted to the results of the midterm elections by declaring simply that the Trump era was now dead.

“When you put Darline Graham losing, Paxton losing, and now Abbott losing, the Trump era is over. It’s over. You cannot lose at this level,” said Christie during an appearance on ABC News. “I don’t care what the president says on Truth Social. The Trump era is over.”

President Trump himself, meanwhile, blamed the Republican Party’s crashing defeat on his own candidates, insisting that the outcome would have been different were he personally on the ballot.

“I wasn’t on the ballot. If I were on the ballot, they would have got down,” he said.
