Key Points – Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday, June 8th, that its forces have advanced into Ukraine’s eastern Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time since the war began, threatening a vital industrial hub. Moscow also announced the capture of Zoria village in Donetsk.

-While Kyiv has not confirmed the full extent of the advance, the development comes as Russian ground assaults intensify and peace efforts remain stalled.

-In a separate sign of frustration, heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk publicly invited US President Donald Trump to his home in Ukraine to witness the devastation of the ongoing war firsthand.

Russia launched a huge air assault on Ukraine overnight. Three people were killed in the attack, which marked one of the most intense in recent months. According to Kyiv, 300 plus drones and numerous missiles hit cities across Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the “brutal onslaught” and said Washington must put more pressure on Moscow to end the war. Speaking after the attack, Zelenskyy said the time had come for Washington to “exercise its power to force Russia into peace.”

Ukraine’s air force reported that 284 of the drones and all seven missiles were successfully intercepted. However debris fall caused major damage in several cities. In Odesa civilians awoke to shocking scenes, as first responders helped people out of the rubble of a collapsed building.

Although Ukraine has made significant improvements to its air defences, the sheer number of drones deployed in this attack posed a serious challenge. Analysts say Russia appears to be shifting tactics, relying more on cheap, mass-produced drones to overwhelm Ukrainian systems rather than on high-tech precision weapons.

Russia Spooked by Recent Drones

This latest assault comes mere days after Ukraine struck a swathe of Russian military targets deep behind enemy lines in Siberia, including bomber bases. Operation “Spiderweb”, an 18-month covert campaign masterminded by Ukraine’s SBU, unleashed drones from within Russian territory. The Kremlin may be responding to those attacks with sheer force, hoping to wear down Ukraine’s resources and resolve. But the result has been more civilian deaths and destruction of infrastructure that has nothing to do with the battlefield.

Kyiv Wants More Western Support

As Zelenskyy continues to publicly and privately plead with America for more support, many fear the window for a genuine peace settlement is steadily narrowing. Inside Ukraine, there is deep frustration. Officials argue that while the West debates and delays, ordinary people are dying. The images from Odesa, with families carrying their children past burning vehicles and crumbled homes, paint a bleak picture of a war that has no clear end in sight.

Russia claims its strikes are aimed at Ukraine’s military capabilities. But with every fresh attack on civilian areas, that claim looks more hollow. If this is what Putin considers a path to victory, then it is one largely paved with the lives, and livelihoods, of innocent people.
