Key Points and Summary:

-The historic White House summit on Ukraine produced a “real breakthrough,” with President Trump committing to U.S. participation in security guarantees for Kyiv—and not ruling out the involvement of American personnel.

-The meeting reset relations between Trump, President Zelenskyy, and European leaders, setting the stage for a potential trilateral summit with Vladimir Putin within weeks. While optimism for a peace deal is high, the specifics remain vague.

-The plan’s biggest hurdle may be domestic, as it already faces significant opposition from influential figures within the MAGA movement who oppose an “Article 5”-style commitment.

Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy to Meet? Ukraine Summit Sets Stage for Historic Talks

WARSAW, POLAND – Yesterday saw hours of incredibly historic meetings in Washington, starting with a one-on-one meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and US President Donald Trump.

Next, Trump and the Ukrainian president met with a flock of major European heads of state, all gathered in the White House.

In the words of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte: a real breakthrough was achieved – one of many – when Trump stated the US could participate in security guarantees for Ukraine.  Surprisingly, he also said he would not rule out American military personnel being involved in a peace-making mission.

The entire day’s interactions, many of the comments made, the body language – they all show that a corner had been turned in the US-Ukraine dynamic.  In addition, there has been a significant shift in the relationship between Trump and Zelenskiy, on the one hand, as well as that between Trump and the European NATO allies, on the other.

However, as is always the case, the devil is in the details, which is what has prompted numerous observers to ask what those details are.

This is particularly so when it comes to what the US security guarantees might look like in practice.  There are no specific guidelines, but the Ukrainian president has said that he sees these as issues that could all be resolved within 10 days.

Major Accomplishments

Some of the major headlines include the security guarantees for Ukraine, although the form they will take is still a considerable distance away from being decided.

Another is that there will be a next step, which involves a meeting, including a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since the February 2022 invasion.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz boldly predicted that this bilateral summit could take place within the next two weeks.

He also announced on social media after that interaction that Trump intends to join Zelenskyy and Putin for a trilateral meeting to end Russia’s war on Ukraine.

“[T]he optimism of your president is to be taken seriously,” French President Emmanuel Macron told NBC News.  “So, if he considers he can get a deal done, this is great news, and we have to do whatever we can to have a great deal.”

But in addition to what amounts to a Trump-Zelenskiy “reset” – and this is unlike the infamous Hillary Clinton-Sergei Lavrov kind.

This one has all the appearances of being for real. And there are some other prominent newsmakers.

The Europeans also made a significant contribution to this turnaround. One of the constant jokes is that, along with other oxymorons like “jumbo shrimp” and “airline customer service”, another is “European unity.”

But on Monday, the European leaders decidedly put up a stalwart united front.

One of the White House officials said later “The Europeans were positive today, but they are tedious,” one administration official said.

“But they were really good.  And if you just were an observer of the two hours today, you’d say, ‘Wow, that’s like a family — a happy family.’”

How We Got Here and What Lies Ahead

Although after the world’s shortest summit – and the even shorter press conference that told us absolutely nothing about what had transpired – it seemed like half the media of the free world travelled a very long way for nothing.

The concerns the Trump administration thus had were about negative blowback from the entire escapade, and were fairly pronounced.

However, on Monday, everything turned upside down.

“After Alaska, we were excited that Putin was at least talking and there were signs we could negotiate,” a second senior administration official told POLITICO.  One of those signs was that Putin for the first time about security guarantees.

Putin was “engaging on a conversation about security guarantees instead of, ‘Nyet, nyet, nyet,” the same official said.  “If Alaska was not successful and Putin didn’t give us a little bit of an opening, we wouldn’t have [had] the Europeans at the White House.”

There is both good and bad news about the breakthrough on security guarantees.

The good part, said another administration official who spoke to the media, is “We haven’t even started [any discussions] other than a commitment. The question is, ‘Who participates to what percentage?’”

“But the president did commit that we would be a part of it. No specifics. And then he said he would also help it get organized.  And he alone could sell that to Putin. I don’t think Putin would pay any attention to the others [the Europeans], and I’m not sure the others would do it without him [Trump].”

The bad part is the domestic resistance in the US.  Some of the loudest voices in the MAGAsphere are already denouncing the security guarantees. MAGA coalition senior commentator Steve Bannon immediately used his “War Room” podcast to warn about the security guarantees in Ukraine.

“I’m just lost how the United States offering an Article 5 commitment for a security guarantee to Ukraine is a win for the United States,” Bannon said on his Monday morning show .

“President Trump has done more than enough to bring the parties together,” Bannon said late Monday night. “Once again, this is a European problem; we have all the leverage here.  If we don’t fund this, it stops happening.  The only way this can continue — the only way this can move forward every day — is with American money and American arms.  The Europeans don’t have enough either military hardware and/or financial wherewithal.”

If the positive voices overcome the negative ones, the war may be on the way to being over.

If MAGA world’s most strident partisans carry the day, the conflict could end up right back where it started.

First off Steve Bannon is not MAGA, he is deep state Military Industrial complex (MIC). While MAGA wants as little to do with Ukraine as possible, ending the war is the first order of business. MAGA gives Trump that room to negotiate. All the whilst, main stream media does it best to interfere. Missing from the news is that the Dombass is 95 percent ethnic Russian. The Dombass has been a historical route for invasion of Russia. You need to go back to the end of World War II and Krushnive to understand that. During the coup in 2014, the Dombass wanted autonomy. This was repressed with north of 14k Dombass residents being killed. Hence Russia entered the Dombass. How this moved to an invasion during the Biden administration has to do with CIA Operations in that area. Don’t trust what I say. Do the research yourselves. I’m not Russia fan, but the corruption in Ukraine and certain political children getting paid, and there were more than the most well know example.
