‘Unauthorized and Dangerous Route’: Iran Says it Sunk Vessel in the Strait of Hormuz with a Sea Mine

In a matter of days, President Trump struck a deal to bring Russian diesel to market, said Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal,” and announced an energy ceasefire. Zelensky called the diesel deal a gift to Russia, and Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy sites continued.

It follows developments elsewhere in the region where a Palestinian woman was killed, and an Iranian man executed on the same day.

Ship Sunk in Strait of Hormuz

On Wednesday morning, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said a vessel had sunk after striking a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz.

Few details were provided about the incident, including the fate of the crew and the name of the vessel.

The IRGC said the ship had attempted to transit an “unauthorized and dangerous route” through the strait before striking a sea mine, catching fire and sinking.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received a report of a container ship striking an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. Still, it is unknown whether the two incidents are linked.

In August, the U.S. Navy claimed it had removed all sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz and said the waterway remains open for travel.

Strait Strikes Intensify

Iran, which closed the strait when the conflict with the U.S. and Israel began at the end of February, maintains that the international waterway is closed, and that the IRGC will target any vessel that attempts to transit through.

Tehran has intensified attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz after an increase in traffic saw Gulf oil exports return to pre-war levels at the end of September for the first time since the war began.

Higher traffic levels partly reflect financial incentives offered to crew members who risk their lives to transit the strait.

Captains reportedly receive $100,000 per month for completed shuttle runs, plus an additional bonus of $50,000 bonus per trip. Sailors also earn six times their salaries, with a month’s pay netting $9,000 compared to the usual $1,500.

At least directly, Iran cannot attack alternate pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the UAE without effectively declaring war.

It can, however, strike commercial shipping it claims breaches the regulations of a strait under its jurisdiction.

After a promising rise, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell again at the start of October.

However, the true figures are hard to assess, as many vessels in the region do not publicly report their movements.

Recent Iranian strikes saw at least six vessels struck in a single day on Sunday, 11th October – the highest daily total in months.

Woman Killed in Gaza

Also on Wednesday, reports emerged that one person was killed in an Israeli strike on an apartment in Gaza City.

Israel’s military said a Hamas militant had been struck, but an assessment of the attack was still ongoing. Officials at Shifa hospital said the victim was a woman, who was later identified as 33-year-old Reem Asaad Awad.

Two other people were reportedly injured in the strike, which destroyed the targeted apartment and nearby buildings.

The daughter of the woman who was killed was rescued from a fire that broke out as a result of the attack.

Despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the former has continued to target suspected Hamas militants on a near-daily basis for the past year.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 1,490 Palestinians have been killed since the U.S.-backed ceasefire began last October.

The United Nations, the World Health Organization, and Human Rights Watch widely accept these figures.

While the ceasefire is a multi-part plan, discussions over the second phase, which includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the complete disarmament of Hamas, have stalled.

Iranian Executed

A man was executed in Iran on Wednesday for an alleged “armed operation” against the authoritarian regime.

The man was accused of being a supporter of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last shah, who many opposition figures see as the successor to the collapse of the current regime.

An Iranian media outlet identified the man as Ali Sina Mostafavi, who was accused of opening fire during the early stages of the Iran war, killing several people, including a child in the city of Kerman.
