The Next Ukraine Crisis: The Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure took a particularly ugly turn on Sunday night when drones struck and set on fire the 1,000-year-old Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1051, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration.
The massive Russian missile attack on Kyiv set apartment buildings on fire and left at least eleven people dead and more than four dozen wounded. Russia launched more than 670 drones and 70 missiles in the attack.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces carried out large-scale strikes against military-industrial facilities and military airfields in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, adding that all intended targets had been successfully hit.
It added that a workshop producing medium- and long-range drones located on the premises of the Dovzhenko film studios in Kyiv was among the targets hit.
This latest attack by Russia left about 140,000 households in northern Kyiv without electricity, according to Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko.
“Crimes Against Christian Culture”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the attack on the monastery as “one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.”
Zelenskyy offered to meet Russian President Putin at the G7 Summit, but he refused.
“We gave a message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7, because Trump is there and Macron is there, so Europeans plus America. This is a good, I think, very good opportunity to meet all together,” Zelenskyy said.
“Europe and the United States agreed, and Russia demonstrated again that… they are not ready to speak.”
France’s foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot said it was akin to bombing Notre Dame.
“Last night, Putin’s Russia once again demonstrated the scale of its brutality, massively striking Kyiv and causing extremely serious damage to the Dormition Cathedral as well as the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra — a UNESCO World Heritage site, which for us, the French, would be equivalent to bombing Notre-Dame or Saint-Denis, Barrot said. “This is absolutely unacceptable.”
He added that Western Europe’s support for Ukraine will only intensify after this.
“A brutal assault on our people and our heritage. This is the true face of Russia’s Orthodox values,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on “X,” formerly Twitter.
UNESCO Issues A Statement On The Monastery Attack
Ukraine’s National Commission for UNESCO, which coordinates the country’s cooperation with the U.N. educational, scientific, and cultural body, formally condemned the attack on the protected property, noting impacts to the Dormition Cathedral, adjacent fortification complexes, and the Ivan Kushnik Tower. UNESCO reiterated that cultural property is protected under international law..
“By destroying Ukraine’s cultural heritage, (Russia) seeks to erase historical memory and inflicts damage upon the heritage of all humankind,” the commission said in a statement.
“In the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, UNESCO condemns the reported strike on 15 June that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, within the World Heritage property ‘Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’, one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks,” UNESCO said.
This Latest Strike Has EU Ministers Pushing For Tougher Sanctions
Russia’s drone and missile attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on Sunday night prompted condemnation from European foreign ministers and calls for an expanded EU sanctions package on Russia.
Barrot said that France supports placing more pressure on Russia, including additional sanctions targeting entities that support the Russian shadow fleet and those responsible for spreading Kremlin propaganda.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna said Russia had “once again demonstrated its barbarity and contempt for humanity’s shared heritage,” describing the Lavra as a UNESCO World Heritage site and “one of Christianity’s holiest monasteries” that had “been a place of worship for nearly a thousand years.”
“Today, it burns because of Russia,” Tsakhna added.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas called it a war crime, while German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called it “a vile attack from the Russian side.
Russia Claims That A US Missile Struck The Monastery
Russia has denied that one of its missiles hit the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery in the heart of Ukraine’s capital, calling the accusations a “crude fake”.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Ukraine and the West were conducting “another falsification” and the Russian defense ministry had described it as “a crude fake.”
The Russian Defense Ministry stated (without offering any proof) that the damage to the monastery was caused by “a missile from a U.S.-made Patriot” missile system, which Ukraine uses for air defense.

However, Ukrainian authorities have stated that the inside of the burned-out monastery was the wreckage of a Russian drone.
Zakharova also accused French President Emmanuel Macron and other European figures of being too quick to falsely condemn Russia over the damage to the monastery while not mentioning Ukrainian strikes in Russia and Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine.
One is left to wonder if this latest attack is connected to Ukraine’s alleged attack last week on the historic “Defense of Sevastopol” panorama museum in annexed Crimea. The iconic panoramic painting by Franz Roubaud was virtually destroyed by a massive fire on June 10, 2026.
Russian-occupation authorities state the fire was ignited by a Ukrainian drone strike. Fortunately, the surviving fragments of Roubaud’s original 19th-century canvas were safely stored elsewhere and escaped harm.
