Iran’s State Media Kept Count: 38 Times a Deal Was Declared ‘Imminent.’ The 39th Came With a Difference

Iran’s state media kept score: thirty-eight times, a deal was declared imminent. But claim thirty-nine came with something the other thirty-eight didn’t — a cancelled airstrike, scheduled for that very evening. Tehran is silent. Israel says it knows nothing. By tonight, one side looks right.

Is A Peace Deal Imminent on Iran? U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on June 11, 2026, that a deal with Iran is imminent and that a “time and place of the signing” will be announced shortly. The president also confirmed that planned strikes on Iran, scheduled to begin this evening, have been canceled. The statement is the clearest indication yet that a deal with the Iranian regime could be arriving soon.

What Trump Said

“Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” the president wrote at 1:28 pm Eastern.

“Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others. The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly.”

It is not the first time that the president has indicated that a deal with Iran is imminent, but it is the clearest indication yet that the claims are true. While Tehran has not officially commented as of 2:20 pm Eastern, the statement is so definitive that it would be difficult for the U.S. president to walk back. Washington was threatening massive strikes on Iran and a potential ground invasion of Kharg Island, only a matter of hours before the latest statement was issued.

What Did Iran Do?

While the president did not offer any details, reports indicate that Iran has finalized and submitted a draft agreement with the United States via Qatari mediators. The New York Post, which reported that Iran had submitted a final draft of an agreement to mediators on Wednesday night, also said the president had told the outlet that the deal with Tehran is ready to be signed.

“It’s pretty much all wrapped up,” Trump said during a brief call with the outlet.

Was A Deal Imminent After All?

The announcement came suddenly and surprised many, including some Israeli officials, but there have been signs for weeks that negotiations were moving towards a breakthrough. Senior administration officials have repeatedly suggested that Iran was engaging in discussions that would have been unthinkable earlier in the conflict.

On May 25, for example, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that a deal framework already had substantial regional support and that a deal could follow relatively quickly. Speaking during a visit to India, Rubio said that every country involved “understands it’s not just very reasonable but it’s the right thing for the world to get done.”

Rubio also indicated on several occasions that a deal may have been only “days” away. That optimism remained in place until the news arrived that an Iranian drone had struck an American Apache helicopter. Even so, the dramatic escalation overnight may have been what finally pushed the process over the finish line. Just hours before announcing that the planned strikes were canceled, President Trump warned that the United States was prepared to intensify the bombing campaign against Iran and had openly discussed the possibility of seizing Kharg Island, the country’s most important oil export hub. The message from the White House was that Tehran can choose between absorbing more military and economic pressure or striking a deal.

What Should We Expect?

No official details have yet been released, but should a deal be reached, it would be sensible to assume it includes some form of nuclear guarantees. In testimony before lawmakers this month, Rubio revealed that Iranian negotiators had begun discussing issues that they had previously refused to touch. The testimony was widely believed to be a signal that Iran was finally willing to negotiate the matter of uranium enrichment.

Reports circulating in recent days have suggested that the United States may be pursuing a lengthy restriction on enrichment, potentially lasting fifteen years. Such an arrangement would represent a substantial victory for Washington, even if it falls short of Trump’s longstanding pledge to ensure that Iran would “never” be allowed to build a nuclear weapon.

What If It Doesn’t Happen?

Some reports indicate that Trump’s announcement may not be entirely accurate. Notably, in his announcement, the president listed countries that had approved the points outlined in the supposed deal.

They included Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others. In response, the Tasnim News Agency pointed out that the president has repeatedly suggested that a deal is imminent.

“Trump has stated 38 times that a deal is imminent. In just three days, he ‘imagined’ sending his deputy to Pakistan four times,” the news agency stated, adding, “As long as Iran does not announce on its own the existence of a possible understanding or agreement, Trump’s reports on the issue should be treated as part of his previous series of messages.”

Additionally, a senior Israeli official reportedly told Channel 12 that Jerusalem is “not aware of any agreement being reached.”
