Key Points – As the Israel-Iran conflict intensifies, President Donald Trump’s cryptic and often contradictory statements are fueling global uncertainty about potential US military involvement.

-On Tuesday, Trump posted on Truth Social that “we now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran,” while also stating the US would not “take out” Iran’s Supreme Leader, “at least not for now.”

-This follows his dramatic early exit from the G7 summit.

-Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of lawmakers led by Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced a resolution to block any unilateral US strike on Iran without congressional approval, highlighting a deep divide on the issue in Washington.

Trump’s Words Decoded: Is He About To Strike Iran?

The Israel-Iran conflict remains at a high simmer following last week’s massive Israeli airstrikes, with U.S. President Donald Trump involving himself in the war while remaining tight-lipped about the extent of his and the U.S. military’s participation.

Despite speculation that U.S. forces may have attacked overnight, there was no escalation, and as of the morning of Tuesday, June 17, there is still no official word on whether the U.S. military will become directly involved in this fight.

Multiple statements issued by the president have so far only muddied the waters further, with Trump announcing on Truth Social on Tuesday that “we now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran.”

“We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran. Iran had good sky trackers and other defensive equipment, and plenty of it, but it doesn’t compare to American made, conceived, and manufactured “stuff.” Nobody does it better than the good ol’ USA,” the president added.

The use of the word “we” triggered immediate debate online. Some analysts suggest Trump may be referring to Israeli dominance of Iranian airspace using U.S.-made aircraft and systems, with Israel’s aerial strike force largely reliant on American-made F-35I Adirs, F-15Is, and F-16Is.

Others, however, have speculated that the social media post indicates that the U.S. is now providing direct support, whether that be intelligence, cyber warfare assistance, or even the secret deployment of American military assets.

Bernie Sanders Has Thoughts on Iran

As the uncertainty and chaos unfolds, some lawmakers are so concerned that the president is about to start a new war with Iran that they are moving to block any unilateral military escalation. Senator Bernie Sanders introduced a resolution on Monday, June 16, that would prevent Trump from launching military operations against Iran without congressional approval. The resolution has drawn support from progressive Democrats and a handful of libertarian-leaning Republicans wary of new foreign entanglements, bringing together the most radical wing of the Democratic Party and MAGA diehards in opposition to Trump’s reported plans.

While military operations may well already be underway, the White House is still showing some restraint. In another post on Truth Social, the president revealed that he would prefer not to escalate to the point of regime change in Iran.

“We know exactly where the so-called “Supreme Leader” is hiding,” Trump said. “He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”

The message suggests that while the United States has both the intelligence and military power to take out Iran’s top leadership, Trump is still looking for Tehran to come to the table and make a deal.

That lingering optimism was confirmed in an interview with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer published on Tuesday morning. Speaking to ITV’s Robert Peston, Starmer expressed skepticism that Trump was preparing for full-scale war.

“Well, I don’t think that can be read into his comments,” Starmer said.

Whether Trump is blustering, posturing, or laying the groundwork for military escalation is hard to determine at this stage.

But, with the skies above Iran already under Israeli control, and with the United States clearly standing behind its closest ally in the region, it is only a matter of time before the conflict reaches a dramatic crescendo. Either a deal is struck, or Iran’s nuclear bunkers are obliterated.
