Ukraine’s Power Grid Just Got Handed Another Winter Warning: Russian Drones Damaged Energy Sites in the Southern Odesa Region Overnight

Russia launched more than a hundred and twenty drones and two missiles at Ukraine overnight, targeting energy, logistics and civilian sites across five regions. Ukraine’s air defenses downed or jammed most of the drones, but strikes still hit eighteen locations as Russia keeps pounding the power grid before winter.

Russia launched another overnight attack on Ukraine on Wednesday night, into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Moscow fired some 128 drones and two missiles overnight on November 4-5, killing one woman and targeting energy, logistics, and civilian infrastructure in multiple regions.

Ukrainian air defenses successfully shot down or jammed 105 of the drones, but strikes were recorded in 18 locations, with debris falling in nine locations.

The attack used jet-powered Shahed, Gerbera, and Parodiya drones against targets in Ukraine’s Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Kyiv regions.

Russian artillery also wounded four women in Marhanets.

Ukraine’s Air Force said that the attack began around 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday with Russia launching two guided Kh-35 missiles from the Black Sea, along with volleys of UAVs.

Of the 128 drones launched into Ukrainian airspace, 65 were jet-powered Shahed-type drones.

Iran first designed these drones, and Russia and Iran both manufacture them and new variants today.

This time, they were reportedly launched from locations including Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia and occupied areas in Donetsk and Crimea.

By 8 a.m. Thursday, Ukrainian forces had shot down or jammed 105 of the drones, including 48 jet-powered Shaheds, the Air Force stated in its morning situation report.

However, they also said that “several attack drones remain airborne and combat operations are ongoing.”

Ukraine used a range of capabilities to counter the attack, including using tactical aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, UAV units, and mobile firing units.

It was not confirmed whether the two Kh-35 missiles were shot down.

Despite this, there were 18 locations that were directly hit, with debris from shot-down weapons falling in nine locations, the Air Force said, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda.

Woman Killed in Residential Area

One of the deadliest attacks came in the Putyvl community in the Sumy region, after a Russian drone hit a private house on Wednesday evening.

The strike caused the building to collapse and catch fire. Emergency workers rescued an injured man, but a woman aged 69 died from her injuries.

Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov, said a 69-year-old woman was killed in the Putyvl community. “Her husband, who was also in the house, was injured,” he announced via Telegram.

Three Injured in Dnipro

Dnipropetrovsk region was also repeatedly attacked as Russian drones hit Dnipro and Samar, causing damage to infrastructure, residential buildings, and garages.

In Dnipro, three people were injured, and several fires broke out.

Russian artillery hit Marhanets on Thursday morning, injuring four women.

Two women, ages 47 and 87, were hospitalized in moderate condition, Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration, said. “Two more women will receive outpatient treatment,” he wrote.

Ukrainska Pravda also reported that several private buildings, apartment blocks, and vehicles were damaged.

Commercial and industrial infrastructure was also damaged.

Russian attacks in the southern part of Odesa have caused significant damage to energy infrastructure and civilian buildings.

A warehouse belonging to a delivery company was partially destroyed, and the admin building of a privately owned medical product manufacturing company suffered damage.

Windows were also blown out at a college and dormitory.

“An enemy attack in the southern Odesa region damaged energy and civilian infrastructure,” Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, said.

Initial reports said there were no casualties.

Post Office, Warehouse Ablaze

Ukraine’s Kharkiv region was also hit with drones overnight, setting a post office terminal in the Pisochyn community on fire.

A separate attack in Bezliudivka caused a major warehouse fire.

“During firefighting, the enemy carried out a second strike,” the State Emergency Service said. Rescue workers took cover and avoided injury.

The fire was extinguished.

Infrastructure Under Attack

In the Bucha district of the Kyiv region, Russian drones hit logistics infrastructure, causing a fire at a business property and injuring one man.

Firefighters controlled the fire and were still putting out hotspots while dismantling damaged buildings, Ukrinform reported.

The latest attack comes as Russia carries on attacking Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure ahead of winter.

On November 4, Russia’s defense ministry said it attacked power stations in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions.

Previous missile and drone attacks have caused extensive disruption to the power supply across much of the country.
