‘Unfit to Serve a President’: Trump Faces New Impeachment Problems

Key Points – Michigan Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar is continuing his push for President Trump’s third impeachment, scheduling town hall meetings in his district this weekend to discuss the seven articles he introduced in late April.

-This effort proceeds without endorsement from House Democratic leadership and faces insurmountable odds against the current Republican majority.

-President Trump has publicly mocked Thanedar’s initiative at rallies.

-Meanwhile, Trump’s team reportedly anticipates a potential impeachment battle if Democrats regain the House in 2026, recognizing its potential to disrupt the administration’s agenda even without likelihood of Senate conviction.

Trump Has Impeachment Issue, Again

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) seems to have settled on a strategy of running for re-election as the impeachment guy. Late last month, the Michigan Congressman became the first member of the current Congress to introduce an impeachment resolution against Donald Trump. The resolution includes seven different articles of impeachment.

Thanedar, whose effort has not been endorsed by the Democratic leadership in Congress, and has little hope of advancing under a Republican majority, introduced the articles around the time a second primary challenger announced that he was going for the Detroit-area seat.

“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” Rep. Thanedar said when he unveiled the articles.

“His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.”

Now, the Congressman has announced plans to discuss the impeachment issue back in his district.

Town Hall Time

Thanedar, per The Hill, will be hosting town halls this weekend in Detroit to discuss the impeachment issue.

At the town halls, the Congressman will offer “an important update from Capitol Hill” and share details about “his push to hold Donald Trump accountable,” The Hill said.

The events, per the Congressman’s website, will take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. One is Detroit and the other is in Lincoln Park.

Trump Reacts

Trump himself, visiting Michigan for a rally last week, referenced the impeachment push, by mocking it.

“Today they did it again. Some guy that I’ve never heard of … is he a congressman? This guy, he said … ‘ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump,’” Trump said at the rally, per The Hill. “What the hell did I do? Here we go again.”

“They want to impeach me,” Trump added, “This lunatic.”

In a social media post around the same time, Trump suggested that the Republican leaders in Congress should push for the removal from office of members of Congress who are pushing the impeachment effort.

Impeachment and the Midterms

Meanwhile, Axios reported that Trump’s team is “wargaming” for what an impeachment fight might look like.

Trump pollster  John McLaughlin told Axios that “I’m certain” Trump will be impeached a third time if Democrats recapture Congress in the 2026 midterms.

It’s long been reported that the Trump team feels urgency to get as much of its agenda passed in the first two years as possible, since they may lose their Congressional majorities after two years. The possibility of another impeachment fight just adds to that.

And while it’s likely that the Democrats won’t earn a large enough Senate majority that conviction in the Senate is possible, Trump’s team, after the first two impeachments in his first presidency, is “keenly aware of how much the process can weigh on the White House and grind a president’s agenda to a halt.”

A Xenophobic Retort

On Tuesday, Juanita Broaddrick, the past Bill Clinton sexual assault accuser who now posts frequently on social media in support of Trump, posted an image to X, featuring pictures of Thanedar and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), along with the message “We shouldn’t allow foreign-born people to be elected to Congress- You have to be born here to be president it should be the same for Congress.”

Thanedar was born in India, but has been a U.S. citizen since 1988, and was a prominent businessman for many years before his election to Congress.

As pointed out by many, there are quite a few people in Congress who were born somewhere other than the United States, including several Republicans. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was born in Canada, while Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) was born in Scotland.
