Key Points and Summary – The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a legendary French fourth-generation fighter, renowned for its distinctive delta-wing design and exceptional maneuverability that exceeds even the F-15.

-This Cold War-era jet is gaining new relevance as France has begun supplying the aircraft to Ukraine to aid in its war against Russia.

-The Mirage 2000 boasts a top speed of Mach 2.2 and can carry a wide array of powerful weapons, including Exocet and SCALP cruise missiles.

-While not a perfect fit for every aspect of the war in Ukraine, it remains a highly capable multirole aircraft.

The Dassault Mirage 2000 Explained

The Mirage 2000 is a multirole, single-engine, delta-wing, fourth-generation jet fighter aircraft designed by Dassault Aviation in the late 1970s for the French Air Force.

Successor to the Mirage III for the French Air Force (Armée de l’Air). The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed and sold to several nations. It was distinguished by its delta-wing configuration and the introduction of fly-by-wire flight controls, a significant advance for the time.

The Mirage 2000 is a highly maneuverable aircraft, exceeding the maneuverability of the F-15 and the similarly sized F-16.

Dassault’s delta-wing design also allows for low drag, low radar cross-section, high-speed aerodynamics.

Meet the Mirage 2000

The first flight of the Mirage 2000 took place in 1978, and it entered service in 1983. Initially, the aircraft was intended only for air superiority, but it later evolved into multirole versions.

The Mirage’s delta wing design had the advantage of the blending of the wing root and engine, which allowed the jet to carry more fuel. The jet’s internal fuel tanks could hold over 900 gallons of fuel, 200 gallons more than the Mirage III.

Featuring advanced aerodynamics, fly-by-wire controls, and an SNECMA M53 afterburning turbofan engine, the jet became renowned for its performance and provided 21,000 pounds of thrust.. The Mirage 2000 can hit a top speed of Mach 2.2 (1,452 mph) with afterburners.

Mirages Sent To Ukraine

In June of 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would provide Kyiv with the Mirage fighter aircraft after training pilots how to fly the warplanes through a program that took place last summer.

He added that Paris will build a coalition with other countries to supply the jets and that Ukraine could even be flying them by the end of the year.

“French combat aircraft—brilliant fighter jets that, under the control of Ukrainian pilots, will prove that Europe is stronger,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a speech to France’s National Assembly, referring to the Mirages.

Mirage 2000 Armament

The Mirage carries two 30 mm (1.2 in) DEFA 554 revolver cannon, 125 rounds per gun. The cannons could be configured to fire at either 1,200 or 1,800 rounds per minute.

The aircraft has nine hardpoints (4 × under-wing, 5 × under-fuselage) with a capacity of 6,300 kg (13,900 lb) external fuel and ordnance.

It can carry Matra 68 mm unguided rocket pods, 18 rockets per pod

Air-to-air missiles carried by the Mirage 2000 include six MBDA MICA IR/RF, two Matra R550 Magic-II, and two Matra Super 530D

Air-to-surface missiles carried include two AM39 Exocet 2000 EG, a SCALP EG, Crystal Maze, and  Crystal Maze II.

The Mirage 2000 can carry a variety of precision and unguided (dumb) bombs.

PGM 500 and PGM 2000 modular guided bombs, two AS-30L laser-guided missiles, two GBU-12 laser-guided bombs, one GBU-16 laser-guided bomb, one GBU-24 laser-guided bomb, two GBU-49 laser-guided bombs, an ASMP-A tactical nuclear cruise missile, and a Spice 2000

The Mirage 2000’s Combat Service

The Mirage 2000 entered service with the French Air Force in 1984. It saw action in the Gulf War, the Bosnian War, and the Kosovo War.

As noted above, it has been sent to Ukraine to aid it in the fight against the Russian invasion of 2022. Like the American-made F-16 that has been sent to Ukraine, the Mirage 2000 isn’t the best fit for the air battles over Ukraine.

The Swedish Saab JAS-39 Gripen would provide a better fit. The Gripen features advanced electronic-warfare capabilities that were explicitly designed to counter the radars on Russian aircraft and ground-based air-defense systems. But the Ukrainians have been adept at using what they have.

Widely exported to countries like India, the UAE, and Taiwan, the Mirage 2000 remains a significant achievement in military aviation, blending affordability with impressive capabilities.

It is a fourth-generation fighter that is still a very capable aircraft.
