PUBLISHED On August 13, 2025, 3:46 PM EDT – Key Points and Summary – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that “Russia has won the war” in Ukraine, a provocative statement made just days before a high-stakes summit between President Trump and Vladimir Putin.
-In a YouTube interview, Orban claimed the West must accept this reality.
-His comments highlight a growing fracture within the EU, as Hungary was the only member state to refuse to endorse a joint statement supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty.
-Citing Europe’s exclusion from the U.S.-Russia talks, Orban warned that if you’re not at the negotiating table, “you are on the menu.”
Orban’s YouTube Tirade on Ukraine War
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Russia has “won the war” in Ukraine.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Patriot, Orban claimed that Western leaders are avoiding the reality of the conflict’s outcome.
“The Ukrainians have lost the war. Russia has won this war,” he said. “The only question is when and under what circumstances will the West, who are behind the Ukrainians, admit that this has happened and what will result from all this.”
The comments mark yet another fracture between Budapest and Brussels. On Monday, Orban was the only EU leader to withhold his endorsement of a joint statement affirming Ukraine’s right to decide its own future.
He said the declaration made Europe appear “ridiculous and pathetic” given the scale of U.S.-Russia negotiations are already taking place.
Orban, who has held Hungary’s top job since 2010 has tightened ties with Moscow, namely by resisting pressure to ship military aid to Ukraine. Orban’s administration has also stood against Kyiv’s push to join the EU, complaining that it could harm Hungary’s farming output and disrupt other European economies.
Russia also exports some 356 million Euros worth of energy to Hungary annually.
Orban: Biden Could Have Made Peace With Putin
Orban also argued that erstwhile U.S. President Joe Biden failed to broker peace with Putin earlier in the conflict, instead allowing the war to grind on.
With Trump now back in the White House, Orban warned that Europe’s voice may be excluded from decisive talks.
Orban told the podcast: “If you are not at the negotiating table, you are on the menu,” in reference to the EU’s absence from U.S.-Russia talks.
Does Hungary’s Stance Really Matter?
Orban’s words arrive at an agitated moment for Kyiv. Ukraine continues to insist it can reclaim occupied territory with sustained Western support, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to join an online conference with Trump and European leaders this week.
Orban’s critics accuse him of being an outright apologist on Moscow’s behalf, which they claim is directly damaging the EU. Naturally, Orban himself claims he is a realist and that the battlefield remains in Russia’s favor.
Whichever description is correct, it will likely have minimal influence on the war’s conclusion. Hungary is a fierce but junior partner in European politics, and the result of the war primarily lies in the hands of Washington and the Kremlin.
