Russia Is Now Running Ukraine’s Own Playbook Against It — Five Straight Days of Strikes on Odesa’s Ports

Russia pounded Odesa’s port and residential districts for a fifth straight day, killing three, as Moscow mirrors Ukraine’s logistics-strangling playbook on the Black Sea. Von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv promising faster joint production — while the UN says June was the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022.

Russian Attack On Odesa Targets Port Infrastructure: Russian forces have struck port and residential infrastructure across Ukraine’s southern Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, killing three people and injuring at least six others.

The attack on Odesa hit a residential seven-story building, killing three people and leaving three more with moderate wounds, city military administration chief Serhiy Lysak said on Telegram. The wounded were transported to a nearby hospital.

Odesa regional Governor Oleh Kiper said Russia’s “massive” combined drone and missile assault had continued for a fifth consecutive day, targeting civilian, industrial, and port infrastructure.

According to Kiper, the attack also damaged a non-residential building, a gas pipeline, a production facility, and a warehouse in Odesa, while elsewhere in Odesa Oblast, a Russian drone strike damaged a gas station building.

“The enemy is deliberately targeting the civilian population and the region’s civilian, industrial, and port infrastructure,” Kiper said.

Russia Targeting Ukrainian Ports On The Black Sea

Russia has taken a page out of Ukraine’s playbook and recently stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s deepwater Black Sea ports in the Greater Odesa area, which handle much of the country’s grain and other cargo and are vital to its wartime economy.

Ukraine has expanded its campaign to disrupt logistics for Russia’s forces in the occupied southern Ukraine and Crimea. Their plans are to isolate Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.

Russian Attacks On Mykolaiv Region

Russian forces also launched a massive, multi-day aerial and missile campaign across the southern Mykolaiv region. The attacks struck port facilities and civilian infrastructure, leaving at least one man injured in the Mykolaiv area.

This follows a heavy strike on the coastal town of Ochakiv in the Mykolaiv Oblast on July 14, where eight civilians were wounded, and a local hospital was damaged by Tornado-S rockets. The recent barrages also included strikes by Molniya-type UAVs that damaged private properties and warehouses across the region, according to regional Governor Vitaliy Kim.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed carrying out a combined attack on the Odesa region using air-launched precision weapons and combat drones. Russia launched a total of two Kh-59/69 cruise missiles and 122 drones against Ukraine overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 101 drones.

Moscow said it targeted fuel storage tanks and loading facilities allegedly used by the Ukrainian military at the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk, as well as a drone production site.

Odesa has repeatedly come under Russian attack because of its strategic role as a major Black Sea port. Civilians have frequently been killed in strikes on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Western Europe Pledges To Help With Russia’s Missile Threat

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy joined several heads of state in Paris on Monday at a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” to discuss how to support Ukraine and pressure Russia to end the war.

The coalition’s plans include developing a new anti-ballistic missile system as a cheaper alternative to the United States’ Patriot system.

Overall, 10 countries, along with a dozen firms from the defense sector, met to discuss what they called the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition.

“We believe that the protection of Europe requires a global solution of integrated missile defense architecture to deter and defeat future missile threats,” the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and Britain said in a statement released.

“It will complement existing ballistic missile defense systems, including sovereign European solutions already acquired or to be acquired by participating countries.”

President Zelenskyy has pleaded with leaders of the United States, NATO, and the West for more air defense weapons and has urged Europe to work with it on a joint anti-ballistic missile defense system.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv and said she would announce steps to deepen Ukraine-European Union defense integration, especially during the cold winter months when Russian missiles target Ukraine’s electricity and heat.

Russia’s attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure included attacks on 612 of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure objects over the last year.

“I will announce new initiatives to integrate our defense industries. So we can produce more, and faster,” she wrote on X, posting footage of her arrival in the Ukrainian capital.

“It’s a special moment,” Von der Leyen added. “Ukraine has built a strong military momentum. The tide is turning.”

The United States appears poised to increase economic pressure on Moscow as a proposed Russia sanctions bill was unveiled in the U.S. Senate following Saturday’s death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of its chief backers.

UN Estimates Up To 40,000 Civilian Casualties In Ukraine

Since the war started in early 2014, Russia has targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure (apartment buildings, hospitals, small neighborhoods), trying to terrorize and break the will of the Ukrainian people.

In one of the most brazen attacks against civilians earlier this month, an 11-hour drone and missile strike across Kyiv killed at least 30 civilians and injured nearly 100 others, severely damaging apartment blocks and an ambulance station.

Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, the UN estimates that there have been between 15,000 and 40,000 civilian casualties, with targeted bombings consistently destroying residential areas, energy grids, and medical facilities.

The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) said in a report released July 14 that June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, with at least 293 killed and 1,990 injured.

Human rights organizations and the UN continue to document these actions as violations of international humanitarian law. Ukraine’s civilian casualties have skyrocketed by more than 31 percent in 2025.
