PUBLISHED on August 15, 2025, 8:20 PM EDT – Key Points and Summary: In a tense yet optimistic buildup that seemed to presage a historic breakthrough in the Russo-Ukrainian War, President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin made no apparent progress in stopping the conflict at a summit in Alaska on Friday.
The two leaders offered no real details on a path forward.
And that, at least for a moment, suggests a failure to make any meaningful progress in ending a war that has raged for years and now has no real end in sight.
The oddities of this meeting seem to outweigh what we know occurred, and surely we will gain more details in the coming days.
But, at least for the moment, foreign policy experts the world over are scratching their heads.
Alaska Summit: What We Know…for Now
At a news conference following approximately 2.5 hours of negotiations, Putin spoke first for several minutes, while Trump looked on.
The Russian president said that Trump is a “dear neighbor” and was glad the American leader was in good health.
Trump then said they made significant progress and headway during their visit, although he seemed subdued and even disappointed at the news conference.
Few Details Revealed for Next Steps
Trump stated that many points were agreed upon. Putin noted that a future meeting could be held in Moscow. No questions were answered during the news conference, which lasted only about ten minutes.
Both parties referred to progress in the negotiations, but no concrete details were mentioned. They were on the same page, but the outcome fell short of what both had desired. There was no mention of Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin Is Circumspect
“I agree with [US President Donald] Trump that the security of Ukraine must be secured, and of course, we are ready to work on that,” Putin said.
He added: “I would like to hope that the agreement that we’ve reached together will help us bring closer that goal and will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine.”
“The situation in Ukraine has to do with the fundamental threats to our security,” Putin said.
“While Russia is interested in putting an end to what’s happening in Ukraine,” Putin explained. “We’re convinced that in order to make the settlement lasting and long-term, we need to eliminate all the primary roots, primary causes of that conflict.”
Setting the Scene: An Odd Choice of Location
The negotiations took place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska.
This was the first Trump-Putin handshake and meeting since 2018 in Helsinki, Finland.
The summit was already considered a win for Vladimir Putin when it began, since he was able to fly the Russian flag high on American soil figuratively. Zelensky was omitted, but he said Friday that Ukraine will be “counting on America.”
Both Sides Sent Numerous Big Names to the Summit
The meeting was also not a full one-on-one deliberation as expected.
Both sides had numerous advisers and staff members present to support the talks, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, as well as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Putin and Trump rode alone in a car to the site of the deliberations and were seen laughing after they left the red carpet on the tarmac.
A U.S. Air Force B-2 stealth bomber and four fighter jets flew over the two men as they walked, while the media shouted questions. Putin speaks some English, and it would have been interesting to see the readout of the discussion the two leaders had in the limousine.
The American Leaders Tried to Lower Expectations
Trump had managed expectations ahead of the summit and said he simply wanted to get Putin to the negotiating table.
The American president stated he did not want to broker a complete deal without Zelensky present. Trump also declared that he wanted to secure a follow-on trilateral summit with the Ukrainian leader in the future.
Trump said to Fox News on the airplane ride over that he would like to create a ceasefire and that he was “not going to be happy” if the Russians refused. Zelensky also said before the summit that he was in favor of a cessation of hostilities. Both warring sides flew aircraft and drones over Ukraine and Russia while the summit was ongoing.
What Happens Next? Who Knows…
Trump will next brief Zelensky, various European leaders, and the NATO Secretary General. There were hopes that a trilateral summit among Trump, Putin, and Zelensky would be the next step, but there is no indication that it will happen.
Stay tuned, as clearly more details will leak out. But, again, at least for now, all we are left with a lot of questions and very few hard and fast concrete facts.

There was no deal, but the meeting produced an understanding that russia’s current progress on the ongoing battlefield shouldn’t be disturbed.
Next time in moscow, the new meeting should allow trump to take advantage of a russian victory to announce end of war and arrival of a great peace.
In the meantime after returning home, putin should plan to crash open the nazis eastern front and send them packing.
81 years ago, in 1944, the Red Army smashed the german front line in belarus in operation bagration, after misleading the nazis about their next move.
The nazis were tricked into shifting various panzer units to ukraine, when suddenly the sledgehammer blow fell on the german army group center in belarus.
The group was virtually destroyed, and the surviving nazis fled piecemeal westward. With the Red Army furiously chasing them.
A repeat of 1944 could well happen soon, and Once the current nazis get smashed, europe will get to enjoy peace for the next 500 years.

In summer of 1944, stavka, the soviet high command, executed a brilliant death-dealing strike against the dreaded nazis on the eastern front.
Through careful use of maskirovka (masking), the soviets deceived the nazis into believing their next big move would be in ukraine, where (remnants of) army group south still stood.
But the soviets instead heavily smashed the relatively stronger nazi army group center then ensconced in belarus, sending them fleeing.
Coincidentally, soviet units also strongly attacked in ukraine, picking up where they left off in early 1944.
The twin blows against the nazis meant the end of adolf hitler was inevitable, the writing was on the wall.
The soviets in 1944 admittedly were very greatly aided by the arrival of the IS-2 tank and the yak-3 fighter.
Today, in 2025, the same exact situation is present in eastern ukraine, or donbass.
Today, the nazis are again about to get smashed up, only that today, the nazis are receiving massive amounts of weapons from the west, THUS making the struggle to obtain peace much more difficult to achieve.

Today, early morning of aug 16 2025, russia must produce a big massive enduring plan to wipe out the nazis in donbass.

By smashing up all the nazi airfields, airbases, airports and landing runways in western ukraine.
Those places are being used to ferry in large quantities of NATO weapons from abroad.

With the stunning success of the summit behind him, putin must now go home and inform the russian people, “Victory is eventually to be ours and peace’ll soon be at hand. Have patience.”
