PUBLISHED on August 7, 2025, 07:48 PM EDT – Key Points and Summary – As a potential summit between Presidents Trump and Putin approaches, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is warning Western allies to beware of Russian “deception.”
-His caution comes as a U.S. ceasefire deadline looms this Friday, and while diplomatic talks intensify, Russia continues its deadly shelling of Ukrainian cities.
-Zelenskyy is also facing mounting pressure at home, with a new poll showing his public trust has plummeted to 58%.
-Amid the complex negotiations, the Ukrainian leader is urging that any potential peace deal not sacrifice his country’s interests in the fine print.
Zelensky Warns West Against Moscow’s ‘Deception’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Western allies must avoid being deceived by surface-level softening from Moscow.
This week, he has warned that “pressure works, but the main thing is that they do not deceive us in the details.”
Zelensky made these comments following the meeting between New York real estate mogul and US envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The talks were part of America’s renewed plans to broker a ceasefire in the 41-month-long conflict. US President Donald Trump told the press there is now a “good chance” of an in-person meeting with Putin as early as next week.
He also said a trilateral summit with both Zelenskyy and Putin was on the cards, which, as of now, seems off. A meeting between Putin and Trump now seems more likely.
Rubio Urges Caution
Still, US officials are naturally cautious about any plans for peace.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that while dialogue had started up, “many impediments remain,” especially regarding Russia’s territorial demands.
As it stands, there is no formal ceasefire proposal on the table.
Economic pressure is one of the main instruments at Trump’s disposal. On Wednesday, the US president greenlit an executive order slapping a 25% tariff on Indian goods, a penalty for its continued imports of Russian oil.
Trump has also threatened wider sanctions on countries still directly trading with Moscow if no progress is made by his August 8th deadline.
A Guardian analysis suggests that while Washington wishes to heighten economic pressure, the Kremlin remains focused on military force.
On Wednesday, Russian shelling in Nikopol killed three Ukrainian civilians and left four others injured. Regional officials said a first responder was among the fatalities.
Zelenskyy’s Popularity Plummets
While Zelensky stopped to survey troops close to the frontline in Sumy earlier this week, it became apparent that standing at home continues to suffer.
A new poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology shows that trust in the Ukrainian leader has fallen to 58%, from 74% in May.
This shift follows a divisive vote in which Ukraine’s government weakened anti-corruption watchdogs, promoting a slew of protests.
Kyiv, in a bid to boost credibility, has this week appointed a new anti-graft officer, Oleksandr Tsyvinsky.
Tsyvinsky will lead Ukraine’s economic security bureau following weeks of delay related to his familial links to Russia.
American Arrested Over Russian Spying Claims
Meanwhile, a 22-year-old US soldier has been arrested for allegedly attempting to pass classified information about tank vulnerabilities to someone he believed was a Russian officer. The Justice Department claimed that the man sought Russian citizenship in return.
Regardless, this slow and uncertain phase of the war ploughs on.
If Putin is truly blinking under economic threats, the question lingers: will Trump’s impending deadline force his hand, or merely push him further into the arms of his allies?

The old adage: “always accuse others of what you in fact are guilty” comes to mind when discussing Zelensky. Attributed to his heroes in the old National Socialist German Workers’ Party.

Those plunky Ukrainians. So used to enlightenment -based rationalism.
OK, Ukrainians, listen up, the Yankee empire just will not emotionally process your existence. The average Yankee Doodle Dandy is trapped in a “Potemkin Village Montage” of MSM imagery that excludes the real Ukraine, the real Ukraine that the Czarina and her faithful flunky, tsarling Putin, demands that you not see.
It is so cute. A democratic president attempting to warn the 2025 USA cultural climate prison. That Zelensky, wow, he just never stops. Maybe Zelensky’s message will penetrate into the perception of the MAGA rank and file.
Zelensky, pay out the cash for a free media channel that documents the PUTIN SEX TRADE computer business since 2014. Let the Yankee pedophile elite computer order a Ukrainian abducted “Lolita” package direct from Putin with the eye colour, hair colour and, you know the stuff that Yankee pedophiles love! After all, Putin’s big time USA competitor, Epstein used to cuddle and whisper so closely the code words into Trump’s favourite ear. -30-
