Key Points – Russia launched one of the war’s deadliest air assaults on Ukraine overnight on Monday, June 16, killing at least 28 civilians and wounding over 100 in a nine-plus-hour barrage.
-The attack, involving over 440 drones and 32 missiles, was seen as retaliation for Ukraine’s recent bomber base strikes.
-Kyiv bore the brunt of the assault, with a missile causing the collapse of a nine-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi district.
-President Zelenskyy, speaking from the G7 summit, condemned the attack as “pure terrorism” aimed at civilians and urged the world to take “concrete action” against Russia.
Kyiv Reels After Russia Launches Deadliest Strike in Months
Kyiv is reeling after enduring one of the deadliest Russian assaults on the capital since the outset of the full-scale invasion.
At least 28 civilians have been confirmed dead and over 100 wounded after a brutal overnight barrage involving 440 drones and 32 missiles tore through the city and surrounding areas.
Two more were killed in Odesa, where drone strikes also struck residential zones.
The nine-plus-hour air raid lasted from Monday evening until the early hours of Tuesday. A spate of buildings including an apartment block were struck Solomyanskyi, an area of western Kyiv.
A U.S. citizen was among the fatalities, although their identity is yet to be publicly announced.
Well into Wednesday, first responders were continuing to locate remains in the rubble of the city. Meanwhil,e further air raid sirens caused other disruptions to emergency services.
Death Toll Still Uncertain
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the full list of fatalities was not likely to emerge immediately, given the fact that people were thought to be still trapped under rubble.
President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the attack as “pure terrorism,” accusing Vladimir Putin of deliberately targeting civilians “because he can afford to.”
Ukraine’s government claims Russia deployed cluster munitions packed with ball bearings—devices internationally condemned for their indiscriminate lethality.
The strikes came as Zelensky attempted to bolster international support at the G7 summit.
The hope of a sideline meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump was dashed when Trump abruptly left the summit early, citing the unfolding crisis in the Middle East. For Ukraine, the timing couldn’t have been worse.
As Russian warplanes escalate attacks on civilian centres, Ukraine’s leadership finds itself caught between two theatres of global instability—Kyiv and the Gulf.
Russia Denies Targeting Civilians
Russia’s defence ministry claimed its targets were military-industrial infrastructure and insisted all objectives were met. Yet the visible destruction and civilian death toll tell a different story. Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko described the horror succinctly: “Waking up in utter nightmare: people trapped under rubble and full buildings collapsed.”
Elsewhere, Russia reported 147 Ukrainian drones had been downed across nine regions, and accused Ukraine of shelling occupied Donetsk—raising the spectre of further escalation with no ceasefire in sight.
This latest wave of strikes confirms a grim pattern: Moscow is betting on aerial terror to break Ukraine’s will while Western attention is divided. The international community faces a choice—either stand firm against indiscriminate warfare, or risk allowing such tactics to become the new normal.
