PUBLISHED on August 6, 2025, at 8:31 AM EST – Key Points and Summary – A new trove of blurry images has surfaced online, showing a mysterious Chinese tailless stealth aircraft undergoing what appear to be active flight tests.

-Observers are intensely debating whether the aircraft is a manned sixth-generation fighter—potentially a competitor to China’s other fighter programs—or a large, unmanned “loyal wingman” drone.

-If it is a new manned fighter, it would mean China is fielding two competing next-generation programs.

-If unmanned, it signals a major advance in its drone capabilities.

-Either way, the repeated sightings confirm China is rapidly developing its next-generation air power.

China’s Mystery Jet Just Appeared Again – And We Have Questions

A trove of blurry images has surfaced online in recent weeks, suggesting that China is actively testing a new stealth aircraft – but observers cannot yet say whether it is a crewed next-generation fighter or an advanced autonomous drone.

Just this week, National Security Journal published a report based on a low-resolution image shared on Chinese social media. The “mystery jet” made its third sighting in 2025, prompting speculation about its relationship to known platforms such as the J-36, a tailless aircraft under development by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC).

Just 24 hours later, at least five additional images have emerged, suggesting flight tests are already underway.

What We Know So Far

The new images depict a tailless aircraft with swept wings and cropped tips, as well as a W-shaped trailing edge—a classic and recognizable design for stealth aircraft.

The front fuselage is pointed, and no vertical fins are visible; the broad fuselage suggests a large fuel capacity.

The low-resolution images, however, make it difficult to confirm any details about its weapons bay.

The photographs do, however, show extended tricycle landing gear, possibly featuring twin wheels on the nose gear.

It is an indication, reports suggest, of a much heavier airframe. Even in the absence of several crucial identifiers, the aircraft so far bears a resemblance to images of the Chengdu J-36 stealth jet.

Even more challenging to determine from the blurry images is whether the aircraft is designed to be crewed or fully autonomous.

Manned Or Unmanned?

If the aircraft features a cockpit, it could point to a CAC-built competitor to Shenyang’s J-XDS, also known as the J-50, China’s emerging sixth-generation air superiority fighter.

The J-50, first observed in December 2024, is said to feature a tailless lambda-wing layout with an improved stealth design and twin-engine configuration.

The platform is understood to be designed for endurance, similar to U.S. Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) concepts.

Suppose the mystery jet is a manned competitor to the J-50. In that case, it raises a significant concern for the West: China may be fielding two competing stealth platforms at the same time the United States is shifting resources away from the Navy’s F/A-XX program to focus on the Air Force’s F-47 NGAD platform.

Alternatively, many analysts, including Chinese aviation expert Andreas Rupprecht, believe the images depict one of China’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) or “loyal wingman” drones. These designs are reportedly being developed to operate alongside new sixth-generation crewed jets.

Speaking to The War Zone, Rupprecht stated that the design differs significantly from earlier tailless CCA designs seen in July and dismissed suggestions that it might be a crewed prototype.

China’s CCA program is accelerating quickly. Multiple drone platforms have been spotted near Beijing in satellite imagery, possibly in preparation for the upcoming September 3 military parade. Analysts believe multiple designs are under consideration, across various size classes, with some capable of operating independently and others designed to support piloted jets.

Whatever this new aircraft is, however, it should serve as a warning to the United States and NATO that China is rapidly developing both its manned and unmanned next-generation platforms.

Looks more like a heavy-duty AI-controlled stealth unmanned fighter.

Which could be employed in the comin’ pacific war (also known as ww3) against US carrier battle groups and MDTF sites.

Assuming it can actually be put into serial production before the war breaks out.

Without these machines, china will have to rely on its DF ballistic rockets and hypersonic cruise missiles.

But those will have to get past the aegis, thaad and pac-3 obstacles as they’re not stealthy.
