Once, President Donald Trump claimed he could end the war in Ukraine “in a day”.
But since he has re-entered office, Russian aerial attacks have sharply risen, a new analysis from BBC Verify highlights.
Russia has more than doubled its missile and drone strikes on Ukraine since Trump’s inauguration in January.
For example, Russia has launched over 27,000 munitions in just six months.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump was keen to claim that the Kremlin would respond to a combination of strength and respect, which he promised to deliver. But more recent data tells a different story. Despite Trump’s return to the White House, Moscow has grown bolder.
Trump’s brief pauses on weapons deliveries to Ukraine, both in March and July, have drawn particular scrutiny. Although later reversed, the suspensions may have signalled U.S. wavering and weakness over the matter to Russia.
Washington Threatens New Sanctions
While the White House insists the president is playing hardball by threatening sanctions and redirecting weapon sales via NATO, there are worries it simply will not be enough to buy peace.. “It’s clear Putin feels emboldened by Trump’s weakness,” said Democratic Senator Chris Coons, warning that the delays in military aid have left Ukrainian cities vulnerable to near-daily strikes.
Indeed, the impact on civilians is stark. Kyiv residents, like journalist Dasha Volk, told the BBC that they survive under a near-constant fear of nighttime explosions. “Every time you go to sleep, you don’t know if you’re going to wake up,” she lamented.
Russia Relies on Iranian Tech
Part of Russia’s intensified campaign stems from its ramped-up production capabilities. Ukrainian intelligence reports that Russia now builds up to 85 ballistic missiles a month, almost double last year’s output.
It is also churning out 170 Geran drones daily from its massive Alabuga factory. The Gerans, reverse-engineered from Iranian Shahed drones, are now a cornerstone of Russia’s drone warfare.
Russia’s Firing On All Cylinders Since Ukraine Aid Pause
Has Moscow crafted the perfect storm? Wobbly Ukrainian interception abilities, cumbersome American resupplies, and a native arms industry firing on all cylinders. Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute told the BBC that the temporary restriction of U.S. interceptors, combined with Moscow’s stockpile surge, likely encouraged the Kremlin to press its aerial advantage.
So far, Trump’s push for talks has failed to yield de-escalation. The president himself has shown flashes of frustration. “What the hell happened to him?” Trump allegedly asked about Putin after a record-breaking Russian barrage back in May, not that it seems to have pacified Putin’s course whatsoever.
With Ukraine’s skies growing deadlier and its people increasingly weary, the limits of Trump’s leverage are becoming clear.
For now, his peace-through-pressure strategy appears to be delivering neither peace nor pressure.

The Ukraine will also have to stock a large functional reserve of defence drones. That is, Zelensky will never know in advance where exactly the location might be that the ruakie genociders will wish to kill Ukrainians.
That means the west has to fund the production of these defence drones. The Ukraine just does not have the cash to compete with the huge Han CCP Zi cash reserves.
Initially a “perfect storm” might be 50 drones an hour for 24 hours. Easily the number could be at 100 drones an hour for 24 hours. Ukraine will have to have twice the number of defence drones functional and in ready reserve.
